Appreciate A Sunset Enjoy this passage from Carl Rogers: âOne of the most satisfying feelings I know â and also one of the most growth-promoting experiences for the other person â comes from my appreciating this individual in the same way that I appreciate a sunset. People are just as wonderful as sunsets if I can let them be. In fact, perhaps the reason we can truly appreciate a sunset is that we cannot control it. When I look at a sunset as I did the other evening, I donât find myself saying, âSoften the orange a little on the right hand corner, and put a bit more purple along the base, and use a little more pink in the cloud color.â I donât do that. I donât try to control a sunset. I watch it with awe as it unfolds. I like myself best when I can appreciate my staff member, my son, my daughter, my grandchildren, in this same way.â ð¤ Learn This Word Njuta: A swedish word that means to deeply enjoy, to profoundly appreciate. â³ From The Archives A hand-picked classic HighExistence article. â[Carl Jung On Why We Must Learn To Accept Ourselves Before We Can Help Others](=)â Carl Jung exhibited the sort of serene wisdom that is usually reserved for the reclusive-hermit-sage. Yet, he arrived at his personal âwholenessâ not through the traditional route of Christian grace or Buddhist meditation, but through scientific and psychological means. Delving into his own troubled mind and reflecting on the neuroses of his patients, he arrived at an unsettling insight. We must learn to accept our own darkness if we want to overcome our own neurosis. Without this self-acceptance, our attempts to help others will be futile, both on an individual and global level. Alan Watts said that Jung intimately embraced his own dark side and: "He would not condemn the things in others and would therefore not be lead into those thoughts, feelings, and acts of violence towards others which are always characteristic of the people who project the devil in themselves upon the outside â upon somebody else â upon the scapegoat." Whenever we refuse to accept our feelings and thoughts, however disturbing they might be, we experience psychological dissonance. Dissonance happens when our behavior does not match our self-image, or the image we think others might have of us. When we project our shadow onto others, we refuse ownership of ourselves, distancing ourselves from ourselves, losing ourselves in the process. This, according to Jung, is how neurosis finds a way to take over the psyche. In a lecture delivered to Swiss clergymen, Carl Jung shared some of his deepest insights on this topic. Alan Watts believes this was the greatest thing Carl Jung ever wrote: â[Continue Reading](=)â ð¤ Experts Often Disagree On Friday we'll release the latest issue of [Stairway To Wisdom](=) including a breakdown of Personal Development For Smart People by Steve Pavlina. Here's a taste of what's inside: âThese experts often disagree with each other. Some people recommend a high-protein diet; others recommend high carb. Some say you can achieve success through hard work and self-discipline; others advise letting go and allowing God or the universe to handle the details. Some experts encourage you to change; others say you should accept yourself as you are. If you try to incorporate all these different ideas into your life, you'll end up with a fragmented, incongruent mess. I soon realized that an intelligent approach to personal development would have to resolve these incongruencies somehow. Such an approach would have to make logical and intuitive sense, satisfying both head and heart." Stairway To Wisdom A library of insights & actions steps from brilliant books sent in a growth-inducing weekly newsletter.
