Sometimes all it takes to brighten up someoneâs day is a smile or kind word, or the generous actions of a complete stranger. Small things, the tiny details, these are the things that matter in life â the little glint in the eye, curve of a lip, nod of a head, wave of a hand â such minuscule movements have huge ripple effects.â - Shaun Hicks As you swirl through lifeâs twists and turns, you will inevitably get cast into a âheroic cameoâ in which you show up in someoneâs life for only a brief moment but for a massive purpose. The shortness of your time on set is no indication of your impact. In this role, you might serve as the fulcrum that helps pivot them in a completely different direction from where they were headed and you will never know the magnitude of the shift you instigated. You might simply smile at a suicidal stranger who was heading to a bridge to take their own life. The twinkle in your eye could pierce through their sense that the world has no goodness left in it and inspire them to turn back and go home. Meanwhile, this is a completely forgettable moment for you. Extending it further, imagine that this person goes on to have a child that discovers how to cure a life-threatening illness saving countless lives. Itâs impossible to trace the true impact of these small choices and the subsequent ripples that turn into waves before eventually maturing into tsunamis. But even if you donât get credit for changing someoneâs life, that doesnât mean you didnât and it doesnât mean your choices donât matter. They do. They matter so much. ð Live Immediately Enjoy these quotes from the ancient Stoic, Seneca: âTrue happiness is to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future, not to amuse ourselves with either hopes or fears but to rest satisfied with what we have, which is sufficient, for he that is so wants nothing. The greatest blessings of mankind are within us and within our reach. A wise man is content with his lot, whatever it may be, without wishing for what he has not.â âThe greatest obstacle to living is expectancy, which hangs upon tomorrow and loses today. You are arranging what lies in Fortuneâs control, and abandoning what lies in yours. What are you looking at? To what goal are you straining? The whole future lies in uncertainty: live immediately.â ð¤ Learn This Word Pareidolia: the instinct to seek familiar forms in disordered images like clouds or constellations; the perception of random stimulus as significant. â³ From The Archives A hand-picked classic HighExistence article. â[Kill Anxiety & Radically Improve Your Life With Conscious Breathing]()â We all must breathe in order to live, but not many of us know how to really breathe. Itâs a bit of a conundrum. Breathing is an automatic bodily process, so most people naturally believe it should be left alone to take care of itself. It seems counterintuitive and even ludicrous to think that something as simple as breathing could, in fact, dramatically change your day-to-day experience. But, honestly, it can. Overcoming Anxiety and Negative Thoughts Iâm someone who occasionally suffers from bouts of anxiety, irrational guilt, and other forms of self-defeating thoughts. I think of these thought processes as psychological trapdoors â they so often spring from nowhere and lead to dark spaces. If thereâs one thing Iâve realized from living inside my mind, itâs that these psychological trapdoors lead to nothing but crippling insecurity and needless suffering. See, for a long time, I unconsciously believed what many people believe: that worrying a lot about something can actually help the situation. It seems crazy, but most of us engage in this type of activity. We try to think of everything that could go wrong, or we try to analyze and rationalize past actions or things we perceive to be negative in our lives to justify who we are to ourselves. Itâs possible to spend the majority of your life â years upon years â thinking this way. Doing so, though, is placing yourself in a very literal form of hell on Earth. Over-analyzing and self-criticizing are two enormous burdens. Itâs hard to notice how much they weigh you down until youâre able to overcome them, or at least get a handle on them. â[Continue Reading]()â ð« Can't Have It All On Friday we'll release the latest issue of [Stairway To Wisdom](=) including a breakdown of Essentialism by Greg McKeown. Here's a taste of what's inside: âThe idea that we can have it all and do it all is not new. This myth has been peddled for so long, that I believe virtually everyone alive today is infected with it. It is sold in advertising. It is championed in corporations. It is embedded in job descriptions that provide huge lists of required skills and experience as standard. It is embedded in university applications that require dozens of extracurricular activities. What is new is how especially damaging this myth is today, in a time when choice and expectations have increased exponentially. It results in stressed people trying to cram yet more activities into their already over-scheduled lives. It creates corporate environments that talk about work/life balance but still expect their employees to be on their smartphones 24/7/365. It leads to staff meetings where as many as ten 'top priorities' are discussed with no sense of irony at all." Stairway To Wisdom A library of insights & actions steps from brilliant books sent in a growth-inducing weekly newsletter.
