How do you balance being a full-time college student and a part-time young professional? This is a question that many Gen Z athletes have come to contend with. When every second of your free time is devoted to your sport, academics, friendships, and love lives can be deprioritized. In 2021, Naomi Osaka and Simone Biles opened up a global conversation around mental health and athletics, and no one better epitomizes this shift toward balance, on and off the mat, than gymnast Nia Dennis. We asked Nia how she stays balanced: “Journaling helped me realize why I was acting a certain way. It really helped me track and monitor where I was at, day to day or even week to week. That was my release of trauma, energy, and whatever was getting built up.
