Restoring his 1957 Pontiac Safari for the road probably would have gotten it more use at cruise-ins and other old car gatherings, but Alan Freed had it restored as it was built - as a Hy-Rail, intended for rail inspection - and now uses it for sightseeing trips via rail across the United States and Canada. Photos provided by the Ironstone Concours d'Elegance. Just as with automobiles that range from basic transportation to wealth-flaunting excess, old travel trailers and housecars can run the gamut from simple small towbehinds to veritable palaces on wheels (some even named "Aristocrat"), and as in years past, the organizers of the Ironstone Concours d'Elegance intend to celebrate the entire spectrum of mobile habitats at this year's event. For some, bliss is a winding mountain road and an agile sports car, while for others it's a plush, family-sized station wagon and a stretch of open road. For those who like to compete, it may involve a drag strip and something V-8 powered, or even a cone-filled parking lot in a light car with a stiff suspension. Naysayers will say dreams like this are often priced beyond the means of the frugal hobbyist, but this edition of the $5,000 Challenge hope...[Read More] [Sponsor] [This Day in Automotive History] THIS DAY IN AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY 9/18/1886: Powel Crosley Jr. born, Cincinnati, Ohio UPCOMING EVENTS [Cars-N-Carroll Show & Shine] September 25, 2016 - Carroll, NE [12th Annual Volks-Meet] September 25, 2016 - Westbrook, CT [All Pontiac/Oakland/GMC Fall Meet] September 25, 2016 - Reading, PA [Cadillac-LaSalle Club Museum & Research Center Fall Festival] September 25, 2016 - Hickory Corners, MI [Innovators Show n Shine] September 25, 2016 - Enfield, CT [Hooters Cup Series XVI, Car & Bike Show] September 25, 2016 - Countryside, IL [See All Events] [Sponsor] FEATURED CLASSIFIEDS Sponsored By: [Sponsor] [1970 Honda S800] [1970 Honda S800] [$16,900] [1963 Chrysler Imperial Crown] [1963 Chrysler Imperial Crown] [$15,000] [1970 Chevrolet Suburban] [1970 Chevrolet Suburban] [$29,500] [1977 Ford Ranchero] [1977 Ford Ranchero] [$17,750] [1940 Buick Special] [1940 Buick Special] [$57,000] [1929 Ford Model A] [1929 Ford Model A] [$24,000] [1969 Pontiac GTO] [1969 Pontiac GTO] [$37,500] [1957 AMC Metropolitan] [1957 AMC Metropolitan] [$24,950] [1968 MG BGT] [1968 MG BGT] [$2,000] [2003 Harley-Davidson Heritage Springer] [2003 Harley-Davidson Heritage Springer] [$17,500] PROMOTED LISTING [1934 Ford ] [1934 Ford] [Auction] PROMOTED LISTING [1933 Buick 60] [1933 Buick 60] [$59,900] [1963 Corvette Rolling Chassis] [1963 Corvette Rolling Chassis] [$8,000] [Kelsey Hayes Mopar Recall Wheels circa 1969, with tires] [Kelsey Hayes Mopar Recall Wheels circa 1969, with tires] [$3,900] [View All Classifieds] FEATURED IN THE BLOG [Cool tool find: Starrett dial indicator pocket gauge] [Cool tool find: Starrett dial indicator pocket gauge] [Challenger Cognizance] [Challenger Cognizance] [See All Featured Blog Posts] FOLLOW US: [Get RSS Feeds of Hemmings Blog] [Follow us on Twitter] [Join us on Facebook] [View our Flickr pool] [View Newsletter Archives] Hemmings Motor News will not sell or share your e-mail address with other companies.
