Your mental health update from HelpGuide, with news, resources, and tips for improving how you think and feel. [HelpGuide logo-2] Dear Friend of HelpGuide, As well as being a time of celebration, togetherness, and joy, the holiday season can also be extremely stressful. Whether you’re anxious about financial or social obligations, feeling isolated and alone, or worried about dealing with difficult family members, this can be anything but a period of peace and goodwill. But there are effective ways to cope with holiday stress: Create a budget—and stick to it. This has been a difficult year and many of us are facing a lot of financial uncertainty at the moment. While the holiday season can be filled with temptations, losing track of your budget now will only add to your money worries in the new year. The more you plan your spending in advance, the easier it is to avoid impulse shopping and enjoy the holidays without breaking the bank. Drinking too much at holiday parties may not seem like a big deal in the moment, but you often regret your choices later. As well as the familiar headache and nausea, binge drinking can also disrupt your sleep, impact your performance at work, and leave you feeling embarrassed about what you may have said or done while under the influence. But there are ways to enjoy the festive season—and your favorite tipple—without jeopardizing your health and welfare. There’s nothing quite like family. The people we’re related to by blood and marriage can be our greatest sources of love and support. The stress of the holidays, though, can fill every family interaction with bickering, badgering, and resentment. By using emotional intelligence skills such as awareness and empathy, you can reduce conflict, let go of blame, and restore comfort and intimacy to your closest ties. The holidays can often be hardest when you live alone, are separated from close family and friends, or have recently lost someone close to you. But loneliness isn't always about your physical proximity to other people. You can still feel isolated and alone at a holiday party, surrounded by crowds of people. But there are simple ways to find deeper connections with others and cope with holiday loneliness. [Learn more>>](113/d2t8NS04/MVGR4k9bHBQW4BHhFR8ZNVlhW4PtzZh4TgQgRN2C5cz53lLBZV1-WJV7CgXsGW3cVMSH3Y_H2-W5KmdSz6y0r18W29l3W01zBC2pW6C8XH-4rpj5hW14Rtql7hw2F3W3TLJ1X2WCL0mW8LPCF03mRvlQN1nBR1vPQSZ9W4V3LxT7t_K84W2dD5J25DpQRpW98cDGh3y4FP6W5QfvX96_1y5cV31fnk1CT07MW1R2v0j4jlXVMW4NhLZ66_mJDXW3Sljy95S3l61W8dZnFP3S-nSyW2gc1S04sFgYxW6TsPn521cXK3W3MD0kN1WJc5kW73dgpf5chwcqW3h_2J76wzRcDW16tmZk6bZNHPW3yyvFv4VC5MhW4xnc_x40bGwwW574vPT4FsfTF3cpG1) Set aside time to relax. For many of us, relaxation over the holidays means simply zoning out in front of the TV after a big meal. But to reduce the damaging effects of stress, you need to activate your body’s natural relaxation response, a state of deep rest that puts the brakes on stress, slows your breathing and heart rate, lowers your blood pressure, and brings your body and mind back into balance. You can do this by practicing relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, rhythmic exercise, yoga, or tai chi. Now two new studies find that younger adults who take preemptive steps to respond to stress are better able to avoid those negative health outcomes. Proactive coping is an umbrella term for behaviors that allow people to avoid future stressors or prepare themselves to respond to those stressors. These can be behavioral, such as saving money to deal with unexpected expenses, or cognitive, such as visualizing how to deal with potential challenges. Flesch reading score

Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
