Want more 7-figure content like this every month? Here’s a hard truth you need to hear: Before there is money, there is math. [Group 935] {NAME}, Once upon a time, before I grew my business to 8 figures… Before I got verified on [Instagram](113/d2M4P904/VWxr2p3JGVFbW38XcbH11wXqyW6TYKFS50VsWYN56dXhh3lSbNV1-WJV7CgLy-N8HYrn4QvVfGVdPCxF59mR1ZW9j9tCG1mtMCzW8J--2v2PvLz8W3QFRPV8vH0kBW8sBP1L2TFTYVW6pn7gZ5S1Y5RMWBf0CnjpZJW1nBs653xWX7lW3LTkDs2nQ2_hT1JMY6nxpL1N8JRmv_MrgK_W9bFJ3f7dtQqRW5PGngJ6yTrt3W7kyzF23V-5D8W77g3Jk14L7k8W1jhyqn53c_q7W1rlT5Y3NYdQDVxWHVy8MTrhcW112yLS4k4w_fW5Vrj6w5SztMPW66m26R8d7DmQ3n3j1)… Before I was [featured on Good Morning America](113/d2M4P904/VWxr2p3JGVFbW38XcbH11wXqyW6TYKFS50VsWYN56dXgp5knJ3V3Zsc37CgZxZW4FWyD1700YN7W3phzfh7M11H3W1vfX6Y7Ldpl6W5j0PS98PclyMW4-ys5f5Bvsh4VfFG__8sfqN2W6ZH0_q1qCFW_W5w6ZZN62Fc1PW4kkhJK86wqGDW7tk8pS88GjnQW1Z4qkt1MBWThF6HbXlNXp-LW8jwlCx4nr3TcW75YcPM1GL71KW5ykGgS24N0-3W5ht7-b6VJn-cW6HvkXN7p5kBVW7G22hD8b_B_NW5Gl6g82hd4T_W7JCXs46BTVjwW2hs44s7VsFf0VZc8ln6BjqlxW5zlD183F0LJTN1PY-MvKRl-0W20BLyg3NV2g3W2NB-zp1yCPS2W2wTg_F3Rzhq7W2l5zpN73sjfzW2gR7wH8KyH4TW92n528395VBRW6s_bHZ7Q1j00W8WZJvK8sPC0p3dSn1) or any other news outlets… I was living in and growing my law practice from my 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom cottage with my husband and 3, count ‘em, THREE children. Needless to say, it was very hard to grow my business, serve clients, and manage a team, all from a tiny home office in my foyer — the only space in my house that could fit an office desk. Not to mention answering the door every time the bell rang, wrangling the kids, and generally feeling stuck inside this tiny space. So, how was I able to maintain the tiny sliver of sanity I had left? I went for walks around the neighborhood, making sure to go up the hill where all the big, fancy houses were. One day I noticed a new house being built on my favorite street in the neighborhood. It was enormous and beautiful — big windows with lots of light, a breathtaking front yard, and a three-car garage; the kind of house that I’d always dreamed of living in. Some time later, the house was close to complete, and a sign had been placed out front: it was officially for sale. I noted the address and ran home to check [realtor.com](113/d2M4P904/VWxr2p3JGVFbW38XcbH11wXqyW6TYKFS50VsWYN56dXg_3lSbtV1-WJV7CgBN5W4Dqfcp2hYxRFW4Dd4Yz15S6fpW89tK7Q3bcRKCW266Z90527v5mW7TTxY16fz2MyW2KnCP62VYcVZW2NnpM84gj_xmVd70Sg3JbQtQW7p6y856mn4YzW4jxxJz4pjbvRW6yPfky4vlNdNW3fjqrV6KKq88W4GWd9J7YN__PW2SmBGK8xWW5JW8yChj48HH-_RVK1rgc7_fkN8W6tCP-13HWwNvW4wdJ0m5TptMyW5BVQg17gSq3tN3ySncMrfZV-32Zj1) to see just how much this dream house cost. I figured it was out of my price range, but maybe some way, somehow, I could make it happen. But when I saw the listing, my heart sank. $2.7 million. That was only about, um, $2.3 million out of my price range. I was so disappointed. I felt defeated. My tiny little house with my teenager shoved in with the toddlers and my husband and I without any privacy and my so-called empire crammed into a corner by the front door… None of that made me feel like a badass. But then, after a tough love pep talk from my husband… I dusted myself off and allowed myself to dream. So what if I couldn’t afford a mansion on a hill right now? It didn’t mean that I would never be able to afford one. It was up to me to make it happen. So, I decided to make it real by calculating the actual cost of buying my dream house — down payment, mortgage, and maintenance. Then I got to work brainstorming ideas to increase my income significantly, so that I could make this dream come to life. I looked at how many more clients I could take on if I hired a paralegal. I looked at different products or services that I could offer. I looked at how much I could earn if I purchased a small rental property. I was open to any and all ways I could use my skills and experience to generate more income. But that’s not the only thing I did. I learned very quickly that if you feel like a Million Dollar Badass every day, then you will likely become a Million Dollar Badass relatively quickly, even if you are only making $40,000 per year right now. And on the flip side, if you feel broke and defeated every day, then you will likely stay broke and defeated. This is such a simple concept, but it’s quite revolutionary. What really helped transform me into the woman who could own a 7-figure home was the habit of doing simple things that would grow my success mindset and help me feel like that Million Dollar Badass I wanted to become. Like getting regular, professional haircuts. Back story: I had been managing my thick, long, and curly natural hair on my own for years. I rarely ever went to the salon and only got haircuts once every two years. So, I found an amazing natural hair salon in Harlem and got a fabulous new haircut. And I started to go every few months. And every single time I left the salon, I felt like a million bucks. I noticed that when my hair was freshly done, I was more likely to reach out to potential clients. I found myself recording marketing videos, setting up coffee dates with colleagues who could refer clients to me, and overall put myself and my business out there a lot more. All because I felt like a million bucks, which empowered me to do the things that would help me generate a million bucks. I did other things, too, like hiring a stylist to help me upgrade my maternity-filled wardrobe. I started getting up early to go to the gym before work. I reorganized my closet, Marie Kondo style. These inexpensive or free lifestyle upgrades made me feel good — and when I felt good I was more likely to take on tasks that would help me to make more money. And since making more money, I was able to move into my dream home. Just a few years after calculating how much money I needed, we were able to afford moving to North Carolina and building a house from scratch instead — a house that’s not very different from that mansion on the hill in my old neighborhood. And it all started with my habit of getting haircuts. Now, I want to make this very clear: Getting haircuts isn’t the magic formula to becoming a millionaire, or buying your dream home, or any other big goals you have. If you’re an entrepreneur and you belong to an underrepresented community in society, there is no quick fix for the systemic injustices and inequalities we face as we work towards growing our businesses, building our legacies, and making more money. But we have the choice, the ability, and the power to tell ourselves a new story about what can be possible for us. We deserve to envision ourselves living out our ancestors’ wildest dreams. We deserve to afford the small luxuries that will make us feel damn good, boost our spirits, and motivate us to get out of bed every morning, so that one day we can afford the bigger luxuries we’ve been dreaming of. And if you’re ready to fully immerse yourself in a luxury experience that will multiply that fresh haircut feeling by 1,000… You should [Join We Should All Be Millionaires: The Club](113/d2M4P904/VWxr2p3JGVFbW38XcbH11wXqyW6TYKFS50VsWYN56dXg_3lSbtV1-WJV7CgP9GW1-xFLl3GjYD2W2rg2053yg-yLW20VYXc6LzV6fVlx6bJ3DkF-JW2dJ1kF6qv-TSW8JrZDh6WX8SWN96CHRFWlDGWVn2qyc5fc4hgW2HJSl53mPnRdW3-9NzM43DKJkW3_hgRV946Dl5N21rRJyydCDFN3gF9BcsvBgTW3dd12s16Hm4tW3xdyjB4lLp3KW3Kcz2Y4X_M8GW4_JQb13d9GJNN7fhyp4jWlJMW3xDghy81H7LpW1HSzlt6kYS0h3dvR1).
