Donât wait around to get noticed⦠get a publicist.
â
Not later⦠but much, much sooner.
â
Did you know that only 24% of people quoted in the media are women? The numbers dwindle from there for women of color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and those living with disabilities. (As in, most of those stats are not even recorded!)
â
That needs to change. We featured my friends and clients, Caitlin Copple Masingill and Holly Conti from Full Swing PR on [The Hello Seven Podcast](=) this week. And they doubled down on their vision to see more diverse changemakers â YOU included â taking over the media.
â
But where do you start? If youâre just now launching your offer, your message, or your mission⦠you must begin with your immediate circle. While researching for my Audible Original, Six-Figure Side Hustle, I asked my clients what they did at the beginning to get the word out. Here are a few examples of what they did: - âI called my close friends and shared what I was doing. I asked them to share it with their friends. I also hosted an open house. This led to my first six clients.â
â
- âI jumped out of my introverted shell and attended networking events for wedding professionals.ââ
â
- âI made a wish list of sponsors I wanted to work with and sent cold pitches to them. I've had partnerships with Verizon, Planned Parenthood, and more.â
â
- âI tried different things to find clients and none of my ideas worked. Until I decided to hold a workshop on grant writing. I charged $90 per participant, which included a copy of my book, glow-sticks, and pizza. I was terrified but did it anyway. I got on a stage and gave my workshop participants tips on how to do grant writing. At the end, I encouraged everyone to keep learning from me by enrolling in my course⦠which many people did!â I mean, glow-sticks and pizza? Now that is a brilliant way to get folks excited about what you do!
â
But after youâve done the preliminary work of getting your business and brand out there⦠you must think bigger. How are you going to make it into the newspaper? That magazine? That TV segment? That radio show? Take the guessing out and hire a publicist!
â
I first hired mine after I went viral on social media. But shortly after, I understood that I should have hired her A LOT sooner. Because as you know, my business Hello Seven has a bold mission to lift up diverse entrepreneurs who are committed to doing good in the world. How would I be able to let folks across the globe know if I didnât have a PR specialist acting as my bridge to the often overwhelming media landscape?
â
Iâm telling you, with four kids, an eight-figure business, and a commitment to live well (burnout who?)⦠Iâm way too busy for all that. LOL. So I encourage you to go ahead and listen to the most recent episode of The Hello Seven Podcast and to take action to get your voice heard.
â
Whether you decide to hire a publicist right away, or take a shot at writing your first press release, Iâm confident youâll realize you shouldâve done it so much sooner, too.
