This app has one simple function: It allows a group of people to make an ongoing thread of videos that the others can watch anytime. It’s pretty much like a group text thread, except that you can only share videos. It started as a way for the group to stay in contact with Eryn, who’d just had her first baby. At that point most of us lived in different cities and, like the rest of the world, we were trying to be creative about how to stay in contact with loved ones through a global pandemic. In the beginning, we would make hours of videos for each other every day. I’m not joking. (How we kept our jobs is beyond me.) Four years later, most of us drop by the thread to give a life update at least once a week. But I’m not here to gush about the features of a smartphone app. It’s not Marco Polo that has kept us all so close for so long. It’s the ways we use this tool to maintain our long-distance group friendship that I want to talk about.
