My very general rule is if it doesn’t smell or look dirty, I’m good to go (with the exception of underwear or sweaty workout gear, which I refuse to rewear). Is this unhygienic? Or am I in the clear? Let’s discuss below. • [Is it healthier to be an early bird or a night owl?]( • [Rucking: A low impact, high cardio exercise option]( • [The best treatments for the most common types of acne]( Be well, Morgan Mandriota, Newsletter Editor, Healthline Written by Morgan Mandriota June 5, 2024 • 3 min read [Is it unhygienic to rewear clothing?]( what’s got us buzzing [Is it unhygienic to rewear clothing?]( The habit of wearing my clothes over and over started 4 years ago. I lived in an apartment building without laundry machines on-site, which meant I had to trek to the local laundromat whenever my hamper was full — and I hated going. To reduce how often I went, my solution was to stock up on underwear, socks, and bras and rewear almost everything else for as long as possible.️ Now that I live in a house with a dedicated laundry room, I find that I’m still rewearing clothes. The main reason is convenience. Doing this saves time, energy, and stress spent digging around my closet for a new outfit. If I already know That Sweater feels cozy, and so do Those Pants, and they look and smell fine, why keep searching for something to wear?️️ Turns out, a stain check and a sniff test can only go so far when it comes to assessing clothing cleanliness. There’s much more to it than meets the eye or nose.️ According to a [2021 study](, proper laundering is essential for controlling microbes, pathogens, and viruses that can cause illness. However, there's no evidence that rewearing your everyday clothing is proven to get you sick or spread infection. Clothing worn by healthcare workers in hospital environments is an exception. And people who are [immunocompromised]( should always be extra careful when it comes to avoiding contact with germs.️ It’s also a good idea to avoid rewearing clothes that are directly affected by bodily fluids. For example, sweaty gym clothes and underwear should be washed after every use. If you go commando while wearing pants or shorts, you’ll want to wash those at the end of the day, too.️ So, based on this research, my personal conclusion is that rewearing clothes is not gross, and I’ll continue recycling outfits without fear or shame. More research around health risks is needed to fully convince me to stop this habit. But to each their own.️ [how often should you wash towels?]( Great finds My favorite high socks [Bulinlulu Seamless Socks]( [Bulinlulu Seamless Socks]( Tall socks with elastic bands at the top tend to cut off my circulation and leave a gnarly indentation around my calf. I’ve tried tons of different brands and styles, and these seamless socks are my absolute favorite. They’re extremely comfortable, don’t leave any marks on my legs, and come in a bunch of colors, too. My sock drawer is full of them! [SHOP NOW]( Every product we recommend has gone through either [Healthline's]( or Optum Store’s vetting processes.
