You know that one item in your kitchen you find yourself using at least once a day? For me, itâs my meticulously seasoned 12-inch cast-iron skillet. Itâs my go-to pan, and Iâd be totally lost without it. Recently, I took this question to our fabulous squad of registered dietitians (RDs). Their responses did not disappoint, and Iâm excited to share them with you today.
And in case you didnât already know, Healthline has an entire newsletter dedicated to mastering healthy eating â [The Nutrition Edition](! [Whatâs the most underrated kitchen tool in an RDâs home? Letâs find out!](
âHigh quality kitchen shears! Literally use them almost every day!â
â Leah Maschino, MBA, RDNï¸
âImmersion blender! I donât know if itâs underrated, but Iâm not sure if many people have one. Itâs an easy way to blend soups and sauces without having to transfer to a blender or food processor. I love it for making homemade salad dressings, blending up a quick smoothie in a mason jar, or even blending some fruit into pancake batter! So easy to use and you can detach the blade and clean in the dishwasher.â
â Jessica Sandoz, MS, RDN, LDN, CDCESï¸
âWhile most people have a knife set in their kitchen, it is important to have a knife set with various knives and a knife sharpener, which is underrated. Using a paring knife for everything is ineffective and can be dangerous! Using dull knives can also lead to more injuries than a sharpened knife. When a knife is sharp, youâll likely be more careful using it, and your knife will work more effectively, allowing you to put less effort/force into the cuts.â
â Kirsten Seele, MFN, RD, LD, NBC-HWCï¸
âTongs! I have two longer ones plus one tiny version in my kitchen drawer. You can almost use it for everything: flipping meat, grabbing pasta for your bowl, tossing your salads, picking up roasted veggies, flipping bread over under the toaster, picking fruits out of a bowl (and if itâs mixed fruit, tongs makes it easier to grab the ones you want â yes, Iâm one of those people). I could go on and on. â¦â
â Annie Hibbs, CPPM, MS, RD, LDï¸
âProbably the salad spinner. If you want to save a little money by chopping and washing your own lettuce, the salad spinner removes so much water. Itâs really an essential tool for keeping your greens fresh.â
â Lindsay Mahar, MS, RDNï¸
âThe zester! Specifically, I love my Microplane zester â itâs thin, easy to hold, and comes in multiple colors. Iâm pretty sure I use it every day, or at least almost every day. As someone who loves ginger and garlic, but doesnât love mincing them, the zester has become my must-have tool. I also regularly use it to shred hard cheeses, and, naturally, to zest lemons, limes, and oranges â if you havenât tried adding citrus zest to your rice yet, you really should!â
â Kelli McGrane, MS, RDï¸
âA good spatula*! My personal mission for the latter half of 2023 was finding the perfect spatula for my needs. My dream spatula needed to be silicone, thin enough to flip pancakes (pancake Sundays has and always will be a tradition in my family!), and strong enough to flip whatever else we eat. Even though we now have six meh spatulas, we also have one that I am always stoked to use.â
â Mohini Bhakta, MBA, RDN, CDCESï¸

[Chemex Pour-Over Glass Coffeemaker](
This is another product I use in my kitchen every day. If pour-over is your preferred method and you make coffee for multiple people, I highly recommend getting a Chemex. Itâs pretty to look at and super functional. The glass is heat resistant, so you can keep your coffee hot on the stovetop while youâre brewing. Thereâs also something about the thickness of the filters that adds an extra smoothness to the taste. It could make a really nice gift for any coffee lovers you know! [SHOP NOW](
