Maryland taxpayers will see more than $130 million in their federal tax dollars returned to the stat

Maryland taxpayers will see more than $130 million in their federal tax dollars returned to the state to fund some 20 projects named in last year’s infrastructure bill. Baltimore City, for example, will get more than $30 million to improve the Baltimore Greenway Trails Network and East-West Priority Corridor and to upgrade commuter rail service through the future B&P tunnel, thanks to Reps. Mfume, Sarbanes, Ruppersberger, and Brown. Howard County residents will soon benefit from almost $10 million in safety projects on U.S. 1, improvements to the Dobb Maryland taxpayers will see more than $130 million in their federal tax dollars returned to the state to fund some 20 projects named in last year’s infrastructure bill. Howard County residents will soon benefit from almost $10 million in safety projects on U.S. 1, improvements to the Dobbin Road pathway, and an extension of the Flash transit line thanks again to Brown, Ruppersberger, Sarbanes, and Mfume. And before their districts were redrawn, Ruppersberger got $5 million for Harford County to extend Woodley Road in Aberdeen and Sarbanes got $2 million for Anne Arundel County to improve the Parole Transportation Center. Good thing they did, because otherwise Maryland First Congressional District residents would be shut out of the federal infrastructure funding package. That’s right. Every member of Congress from the Maryland delegation earmarked infrastructure projects from their districts to receive some portion of the federal money to help make needed and often critical improvements to important transportation systems. Every member but one: Andy Harris. Why would Harris leave his constituents empty? Why wouldn’t he look around the First District and see all the roads and bridges that are badly in need of repair, replacement, and expansion? Why wouldn’t he want to create good-paying jobs and help contractors and other small businesses, as well as provide long-term benefits by improving traffic flow and safety? Why would he choose to have us subsidize the rest of the state – the rest of the country – but not get any of our own tax dollars in return? I can’t begin to guess. Ask him, and let me know what he says. But I know that if I’m elected, I’ll do all I can to make sure First District taxpayers get their fair share of federal investments and that we get the funds we need to build the next-century economy.
