Tomorrow: Our Town Hall on Climate, Here are Some Thoughts

And here in Maryland we are particularly vulnerable. The Climate Change Program of the Maryland Department of the Environment points out that with 3,100 miles of shoreline, Maryland is one of the four states most vulnerable to the effects of sea-level rise associated with climate change. With each passing year we are seeing the effects, with extreme weather events increasing in frequency and intensity. The First District, with much of that vulnerable shoreline and a local economy and culture closely tied to the Chesapeake Bay, is particularly vulnerable. Rising sea levels and warming temperatures threaten the large sectors of the district’s economy devoted to agriculture, fisheries, and tourism. Dorchester County has been experiencing the effects of rising seas for some time now. According to a report in the Washington Post, “experts say the confrontation with rising water caused by climate change is coming more quickly than just about anywhere else on the East Coast,” with shorelines receding by as much as 600 feet since the 1970s. Worse yet, these losses are a precursor of what will happen elsewhere. Action is needed to protect our way of life, and Dave Harden is ready to take action. As a “can-do” Marylander raised on a farm and whose great-grandmother sold the family’s Eastern Shore produce and seafood at Baltimore’s Lexington Market, he believes in rolling up his sleeves and tackling problems. Dave believes that innovation, technology, and infrastructure can mitigate the effects of global warming. That we can protect the Bay by creating jobs that prepare our district for a new and clean-energy future, by investing in alternative and renewable energy sources that will decrease air and water pollution. And these jobs of the future will enhance the local economy and create more jobs for watermen, farmers, brewers, and small businesses and connect them to high-end markets. Dave sees a First District that is well-positioned to build and test these innovations but needs more leadership and vision to champion the necessary research and development, assemble sufficient private and public capital, and recruit some of the globe's best talent that is already right here in Maryland. The First District’s current representation in Congress is not up to the task. The League of Conservation Voters’ 2021 National Environmental Scorecard gave Andy Harris a score of 0%. Let’s replace him with a man with deep historical roots in the First District, who will bring our values and work ethic to the task at hand.
