When it comes to horses, my definition of connection starts with the mental connection. It’s about the relationship, bond, attention, and understanding between you and your horse, in both handling and riding. Connection is an energy exchange between two beings who are paying attention to each other. It has the power to deepen the moment, inspire change and build trust. When you have a mental connection with your horse, you are attuned to your horse’s feelings, responses and reactions.  You know ‘who’ your horse is as an individual.  You understand how best to approach and develop him, and you care about his confidence and quality of experience in your interactions. In return, your horse feels your connection and is interested, calmed, and inspired by it.  A person who is more focused on techniques and tasks is usually not very connected to how the horse is perceiving or experiencing the process; and a horse that is more focused on other horses, the barn, or looking for danger is not mentally connected to the handler or rider.  The art lies in not only wanting that mental connection but also knowing how to get it! In Module 1 of How to Talk Horse you will learn about the attitude and approach that will help you to achieve it through compassion, empathy, thinking like a horse, and then specific exercises that teach your horse to look to you for safety and direction, just like they do the alpha members of the herd.  "Thanks to your insight, Linda, I'm learning that I am "loving" my Iridium the wrong way....It's uncomfortable for me to recognize and change that, but your wonderful curriculum is KEY in our progress for a TRULY happy relationship. Thank you SO MUCH!!" - Ellen F. I am feeling excited to be an Instructor in the Happy Horse program with Linda Parelli emphasizing the importance of the first 3 modules of Connection, Relaxation, and Responsiveness.  I would like to present an example of Zero Fight from a nuanced perspective in releasing pressure at the slightest sign a horse expresses a “no” response so they feel understood in the relationship. On a personal level do you trust someone or feel safe with them when they don’t listen to or get you? How would you feel about staying in a relationship in which you would need to resort to “doing as you are told” in order to make that relationship work? Putting the relationship first with a horse means letting go of the ego’s need to show results in a particular time frame and letting go of inaccurate ideas about “letting the horse win if you give in to it”.
