This Seoul-based Ambassador shares how much the city's vegan scene is growing! [View this email in your browser]( [HappyCow]( [Cowmunity Member Spotlight]( Meet Bonnie! If you’re curious about vegan food in Korea, [Bonnie]( (also known as BonBon) is the perfect guide! As a HappyCow Ambassador for [Seoul]( her goal is to encourage and support anyone in finding plant-based alternatives. Learn more about her vegan journey, favorite restaurants, and more below! For Bonnie, going meat-free was a challenge. [HappyCow Ambassador Bonnie]( I’ve been vegan for approximately 4 years. Before that, I was a vegetarian for 13 years, which was influenced (among other factors) by me painfully realizing that I had eaten my beloved animal friends as a child in Korea. At the beginning, I didn’t know anything about vegetarianism or veganism, and a meat-free diet was a big change for my family. But I liked the challenge and, since I was old enough to cook for myself, it was also possible to experiment in the kitchen. The [environmental effect]( of conventional livestock industries, including the production of dairy and eggs, eventually made me want to follow a vegan diet. Check out Bonnie’s favorite restaurants! Save these restaurants to your [Favorites]( now to make it easier to find them later! [3 scoop set, ice cream sandwich, and Mojito drink]( [AcheMi]( Seoul [An assortment of bread and a cookie.]( [For Four Bread]( Seoul [A bowl of mixed Kalguksu noodles]( [JumJumJumJumJumJum]( Seoul Seoul’s vegan options are improving! [Green pesto tofu noodle salad from Monk's Deli]( I've spent most of my life in [Berlin]( (Germany) and [Seoul]( (Korea), and I have to say that Berlin is much more accommodating for vegans. Seoul has a lot to catch up to, starting with basic clarifications of what is vegan, vegetarian, and pescatarian. Yet, Seoul is a rapidly changing city, and there seems to be a trend towards more plant-based food and sustainability now. It is exciting to see new vegan-friendly places opening up in Seoul these days! New vegans, keep this in mind: What I want people to know is that not-eating-animals does not mean you are missing out on good food. For me, refusing to eat animals has been a challenging yet exciting journey! My eyes opened up to the [diversity of alternative ingredients]( and my taste buds have experienced unforeseen flavors and textures. There are countless edible plants, mushrooms, and kinds of seaweed to discover! Keep up with Bonnie! Want to know more about Korean food culture and curious Korean ingredients? Join Bonnie on her culinary adventures! Besides her HappyCow reviews, she runs a food blog and Instagram account centered around plant-based eating in Korea.
