[View this email in your browser]( Live Showroom Auction: 31 January, 11am ET Public Preview: 28–30 January, 11am–4pm ET Catered Exhibition Reception: 28 January, 12–4pm ET Material Culture's 31 January auction, ‘Mountain High | Rugs, Kilims and Trappings’ is poised to present a diverse collection of Persian, Anatolian, Caucasian and Central Asian tribal and nomadic weavings. With a total of 302 lots available, a notable portion hails from the estate of the late Eric Jacobson, a passionate collector from Portland, Oregon. The common thread binding these diverse lots is a shared appreciation for impeccable condition and vibrant, saturated natural dye colours. This auction serves as a unique opportunity for enthusiasts and collectors to acquire pieces that not only reflect the rich cultural heritage of the region but also embody Eric Jacobson's discerning taste and commitment to preserving the beauty of these woven treasures. Noteworthy highlights include a captivating Khamseh 'mother/child' boteh rug ([lo]( 2]( characterised by free-ranging, spontaneous shifts and subtle variations (est. $2,000–4,000). Among the fine Khamseh bird rugs, a standout is an ivory field rug with generous proportions and classic elegance ([lot 3]( est. $2,000–3,000). Venturing further east in Persia, a Kordi rug from the Quchan region showcases Turkmen-inspired motifs rendered inventively and with folk elements ([lot 5,]( est. $1,000–2,000). The sale also features attractive and collectible flatweaves, including a bold and dramatically geometric Qashqai kilim ([lot 133]( est. $1,000–1,500) that invites comparisons with modern art. For the true collector, a remarkable inclusion is the offering of eight 19th-century northwest Anatolian Yüncü heybe (saddle bag), all in remarkably good condition. It is challenging to pick a highlight amongst them, as they all speak a similar language with nuanced variations, but [lot 290]( (est. $400-800) is one example. HALI readers and the public are cordially invited to a catered exhibition reception on 28 January from 12–4pm. The event will include a discussion and an informal gallery walkthrough at 1pm with guest speaker James Opie, the author of Tribal Rugs of Southern Persia and Tribal Rugs: Nomadic and Village Weavings from the Middle East and Central Asia.
