The 283 lots can be previewed from 30 November–1 December from 11am–5pm and 2 December from 11am–4pm. Among the seventy Turkmens offered is [lot 93]( (above), a 19th-century Esari Beshir prayer rug (est. €10–15,000), which is an exceptional example of its type. The late Ralph Kaffel wrote the best survey of this enigmatic group in HALI 151, for which he studied 140 examples and identified circa fifty-six with variations of the ascending tree of pomegranates, something that connects the urban workshops of the Amu Darya region with those in East Turkestan. This example has a clarity of drawing above the arch and white ground mihrab that is second to none. Another of the twelve prayer rugs in the sale has a less classical form and begs the question of whether it is even in a prayer rug format. [Lot 117]( is 19th-century Kazak rug (est. €8-12,000) with a central design that looks like an animal skin or pelt. Its mirrored arch format is sometimes referred to as a double prayer design. Its totemic nature, along with the size and suggested prayer arch, reflect the strong and ancient traditions of the Caucasian region, where animistic beliefs combine with Muslim traditions to create a truly unique artistic expression.
