[View this email in your browser]( Austria Auction Company will hold its 'Fine Antique Oriental Rugs XXXIV' sale on 21 October 2023 at 4pm CEST. The lots can be previewed from 18–20 October from 11am–5pm and 21 October from 11am–4pm. The sale offers over 200 unique pieces. A particular highlight is the early large Esari chuval ([Lot 85]( shown above. Its deep and varied colour range has an immediate impact: that the green has retained its brightness and luminosity is quite remarkable, and the red ground has a clarity that is hard to better in weavings from the Middle Amu Darya. This region has become of great interest to collectors and researchers of Turkmen weavings because it is the only area where the relatively stable and conservative cultural traditions of Turkmen tribes all came together alongside urban traditions to create a unique expressive aesthetic. This chuval is a good illustration of how brilliant these forms of artistic expression could be. The zigzags create three distinct areas in the field, each of which has hooked forms of a göl that seem relate to the Chodor ertmen-göl. There are a handful of examples with this design; however this is arguably the best known because of its colouration, the addition of the small ikat forms in the field, and most importantly the extremely elegant and powerful mina khani design on the elem– a particular favourite of collectors.
