The 28 September auction showcases a total of 659 lots of Ethnographic, Ancient, Asian and Textile Arts, with a total of 239 lots of textiles spanning many cultures and time periods. Among the South American textiles, there are a number of Aymara weavings. One standout is [lot 445]( a unique Aymara Aksu Bolivar (woman’s overskirt) with a purple field and a float span design in the upper panel that is of rare Inca origin (the Bolivar region, province of Arque, dept. of Cochabamba, mid–19th century, est. $4000-6000). Moving North, Native American weavings in the sale are represented by an exuberant Navajo 1890’s rug with a bold running dog border and hourglass and rhomboid figures on a red ground ([lot 424]( est. $1000–1500). Among the Middle Eastern textiles, one worth careful viewing is [lot 481]( a rich red Armenian silk satin square with highly detailed metal embroidery, covered with lengthy inscriptions and wonderful images of angels surrounding a sun with Christ on the cross. (ca. 1820, est. $500–1000). Indonesian textiles are well represented in the sale, including a Palepai Ceremonial Ship Cloth Hanging, Lampung, Sumatra ([lot 593]( ca. 1900, est. $1000–2000). Other noteworthy textiles include an African Bamileke ceremonial dance cloak, woven of fabric and human hair ([lot 352]( Cameroon, early 20th century,117 x 124 cm, est. $400-600). And perhaps one of the rarest items is [lot 528]( a Samoan 'ie toga, a finely woven mat that held the highest cultural value in Samoa (early 20th century, est. $200–400).
