There will be many options for the well-informed bidder within a broad selection of over 300 unique pieces. Among the lots that share the auctioneer’s highest expectations is a Marsali rug ([Lot 220]( shown above). Marasali rugs usually are found in prayer rug format or sometimes as long rugs, so secular versions such as this are unusual. In this example, the bird-like form in the border (meant to depict grapes) is nicely drawn and the flaming boteh forms demonstrate excellent variation in colour and design. A charming detail is the herd of quadrupeds cantering around the field. Another highlight is a Fachralo prayer rug ([Lot 281]( with effectively contrasting red and blue ground colours, balanced by an unusually generous number of surrounding bug motifs. Also of note is an interesting layering effect resulting from the central star medallion being outlined in the same colour as the main ground, and the little white stars above and below the central medallion which provide intriguing interruptions to the visual rhythm and serve to emphasise the mirab. Usually a wine glass motif would be found in the border of rugs of this type, but its absence here creates a much stronger contrast. Also noteworthy is a Joshegan rug ([Lot 269](. This is a rare survivor of early to mid-19th century Persian carpet production– not many have survived the ravages of time. 18th and 19th century high Persian taste favoured designs with small flowers and repeat designs of cartouche medallions. Of particular interest are the interlocking serrated leaves in the minor borders which indicate an early 19th century date, alongside the white border with a pair of birds flanking a flower. A final mention goes to a Yomut main carpet ([Lot 189](. A complete carpet with an almost identical design to the one seen here was attributed to the Qaradashli tribe and to the end of the 17th or early 18th century (plate 91) by Jürg Rageth in his book 'Turkmen Carpets : A New Perspective'. The intensity of colour in the present example is of particular note and the secondary dyrnak gül is beautifully drawn with a multitude of white infills/accents.
