[Follow A. Davoodzadeh & Son on Instagram]( [News] This month's focus on ikat for [#RugFactFriday]( is in keeping with its exploration in recent exhibitions and book publications. While we often deep dive into particular regional iterations of the technique, ikat is seldom explored through a global lens. The exhibition âIkat: A World of Compelling Clothâ at the Seattle Art Museum (showing until 29 May 2023) does just that. While never losing sight of the regional significance and symbolism of certain textiles, it manages to touch on the universal appeal and qualities of this beloved way of making. Visitors can navigate the exhibition's selection of silk road coats from Uzbekistan, futon covers and kimonos from Japan, ponchos from the Americas, sarongs from Southeast Asia, 17th-century European furnishing fabrics, alongside pieces from many other regions. The exhibition also serves as a response to consumerist culture and its obsession with fast fashion, rather, offering a reminder of 'the power of slow fashion and the sacredness of clothing as art'. âIkat embodies a commitment to slow and meaningful creation,â says Pamela McClusky, Oliver E. and Pamela F. Cobb Curator of African and Oceanic Art at Seattle Art Museum. The museumâs inclusive take on ikat is made possible by the breadth of the David Paly Collection, upon which it calls for many of its exhibits. This collection is further explored in the new publication 'Global Ikat: Roots and Routes of a Textile Technique', published by The Historic Textile Research Foundation in cooperation with Hali Publications Ltd.
