[View this email in your browser]( Olympia Auctions will hold its 'Asian and Islamic Works of Art' sale on 26 April at 11am BST. Many of the 294 lots in the sale are from a number of private collections, including that of Louisa Service OBE, who led a life dedicated to voluntary work and had a great passion for antiques. Of particular interest from her collection are two paintings by the celebrated Bengali artist, Jamini Roy, whose characteristic folk-art-inspired paintings are now highly sought after in India and across the world. Another highlight from the Louisa Service collection is a fine Ming celadon dish from the Longquan kilns. Also noteworthy are a group of Islamic tiles from two private collections. There is also an interesting collection of Gandharan sculpture from the collection of a late diplomat, now being sold by his family. The Greco-Roman influence in the art of this region which flourished in the 3rd and 4th centuries CE dates back centuries earlier to the invasion of Alexander the Great. Although Buddhism was the inspiration for this surge of artistic activity, the sculptural style and much of the decorative detail would have been very familiar to Europeans of the time. Shown above is [Lot 234]( an Ottoman silk velvet çatma panel, Bursa, Anatolia, circa 1600. It is funded by the Barakat Trust’s Hands On Islamic Art grant and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. New work by Hage has been commissioned, based on the Levantine practice of embroidering wedding trousseaus and on her reinterpretation of symbolism seen in the Arab Hall at Leighton House (left). Created between 1877 and 1881 by the artist Frederic Lord Leighton and his architect George Aitchison, this room was inspired by their travels and designed to house Leighton’s tile collection. Hage’s practice is centred on Middle Eastern identities, culture, history and storytelling with a focus on the role of women, the supernatural and mental wellbeing. It brings together works by twelve contemporary artists ‘in tender dialogue with, and in homage to, the contributions of the Gee’s Bend Alabama quilters—Black American women in collective cooperation and creative economic production—and their enduring legacy’.
