[View this email in your browser]( Austria Auction Company will hold its tenth ‘no-reserve’ auction of ‘Collector Rugs’ on 18 February 2023 at 4pm at its Palais Breuner rooms in Vienna. The sale will offer a broad selection of primarily 19th or early 20th-century Caucasian, Anatolian, Persian, Central Asian, Chinese, Tibetan and other rugs (as well as a handful of textiles) from many weaving cultures. Of great interest in the sale is a quintet of Turkmen main carpets, including an early ‘Igdir’ (Yomut family) fragment, reduced in length and reconstructed ([lot 136]( shown above), and an equally old-looking Tekkegöl fragment, entirely missing all vestige of its borders, leaving the remote possibility that it may originally have had even more than seventy-two göls ([lot 135](. There are also two further Yomuts, both with the tauk-nuska göl field design and white ground borders, but of rather different character ([lots 44]( and [134]( as well as a very precisely-drawn and knotted late 19th century Ersari with just two bold columns of six well-rounded gölli-göls, in superb condition with complete striped flatwoven ends ([lot 128](. The sale room is open for public preview from 15–17 February, 11am to 5pm, and on 18 February from 11am to 4pm. It is an incredible display of forty pieces, including thirteen Anatolian kilim fragments and twenty-seven carpet fragments, ranging in provenance from Anatolia, Persia, the Caucasus and Central Asia. Every piece on display is of significant age and and offers points of interest that will entice the knowledgeable collector, as well as the aesthetes among us. Of particular interest is the Kerman Vase carpet fragment, shown above, which is the oldest piece in the exhibition, exhibiting a little-known design type. Also on display is a 17th-century 'Polonaise' fragment and an 18th-century Caucasian Afshan carpet fragment. The exhibition opened on 6 February 2023 as part of the Hali pre-colloquium events. A series of programmes within the gallery, including interfaith dialogue, poetry and music, will bring community members together for shared experiences designed to foster understanding and transcendence. Set against lavender walls, what color is divine light? contains thousands of fine chromatic threads in complementary yellow and blue colours, creating a cloud of colour that evokes light itself. Lindberg’s installation invites visitors to gather and reflect: If divinity could be experienced as a physical presence, what might it look like? Sound like? Feel like? What colour is divine light? Anne Lindberg created the installation after being inspired by a 1971 essay by art historian Patrik Reuterswärd that posed the same question. This is both her response and an echoing prompt to visitors. [Find out more.]( [News] 'Rugged Beauty: Antique Carpets from Western Asia' is being held at Denver Art Museum until 28 May 2023. The exhibition showcases a variety of carpets from present-day Iran, Turkey, and the Caucasus, revealing differing weaving techniques, designs and colour palettes between cultures. These differences reveal the rich, varied history of these cultures, alongside the relationships between them. On 25 March, the Avenir Institute of Textile Arts and Fashion's first symposium ‘From Workshop to Nomad: New Thinking about Rug Weaving Categories and Design Influences’ will explore the various weaving cultures of West Asian carpets, inspired by this exhibition. [Find out more.]( Curated Auctions in London will hold 'The Classics: Luxury & Splendour' sale on 15 February 2023.
