[View this email in your browser]( Lyon & Turnbull are delighted to be offering a large, unique Ushak carpet in their Five Centuries auction, taking place in Edinburgh and live online on 17 November 2022. Made especially for the Court Room of the Dyers' Hall in London, the Companyâs Gift Book records that this carpet was commissioned and presented in 1930 by the Court Assistant Dr. Gerald Moody. At the time Dr. Moody commissioned this impressive carpet for the Court Room, the city of Ushak in the new Republic of Turkey had a significant, well established reputation for rug weaving. An Ushak piece would therefore have been an obvious choice for a good quality carpet on a grand scale for the principle room of the Dyersâ Hall. Almost a century on, a new bespoke carpet was commissioned to mark the 550th anniversary of the Company Charter and it is now time for the Dyers' Hall Ushak to find a new home. The Malay world encompasses a vast swathe of Southeast Asia, from the Malay Peninsula to the coasts of Sumatra, Borneo, and many smaller islands in between. For centuries, textiles have played fundamental roles in the social, economic, and religious life of Malay peoples, but among the various Southeast Asian textile traditions, however, those of the Malay peoples have received relatively little attention from scholars and collectors. Based upon the recent exhibition of his textiles and costumes in Menaraa, Kuala Lumpur, collector and scholar John Ang will showcase the beauty, diversity, and complexities of Malay textiles. He will cover weaving and dying traditions, discussing cultural, artistic and trade exchanges and influences from the greater South Asian and Pacific Asian region, by categorising the entire genre, including songket (brocade), limar (weft ikat), telepuk (gold leaf application), tekatan (embroidery), pelang (tie-dye), ikat loseng (warp ikat) and more. A post-program recording will be available. [Register to join.]( Wannenes' second online rug and textile auction of the year will run from 4â15 November 2022. It offers 184 pieces ranging from the antique to the contemporary, representing European and Middle Eastern manufacture. Auction highlights include [lot 124]( (shown above) which is a Serapi from Eastern Azerbaijan, circa 1860, with an estimate of â¬5â7,000. Another highlight is [l]( 117]( which is a Caucasian Kazak Genje, circa 1880, with an estimate of â¬3,500â4,000. Its extraordinary ivory ground, features a series of multicoloured boteh. Rugs from this region are in great demand among collectors, who appreciate the authenticity and spontaneity of the designs, which are simple but elegant. Traditionally they were knotted by semi-nomadic populations on a horizontal loom, with hand-spun wool coloured with vegetable dyes. One of the most modern lots is [lot 27]( a woollen leaf carpet featuring a design by Ugo Nespolo, dated 1974, with an estimate of â¬3,500â4,000. It is attributed to the atelier of Elio Palmisano, one of the few Italian manufacturers to have knotted and woven tapestries and carpets of great quality after works by well-known artists such as Paul Klee, Gustav Klimt, Giacomo Balla, Fortunato Depero and many others. It will take place at the University Women's Club, London on 9 November 2022 at 7pm. Eighteen surviving fragments of Konya rugs suggest that these carpets, woven by the Seljuks of Rum in Anatolia, were large and all made using the same colour palette and the same geometric patterns and pseudo-Arabic inscriptions. However, there are doubts surrounding dating these rugs and the extent to which they were produced. In this talk, Roberta Marin will discuss the enigmatic history of the Konya carpet.
