In reference to the embroidery, eminent textile scholar Rahul Jain explains: 'When a subject and a period of art history are starved for examples, to come across a survivor as rare and remarkable as this is of extraordinary significance. It can be stated, at the very outset, that the sheer surface art and workmanship of this embroidery locate its production in a highly-specialised atelier connected to a leading, medieval Asiatic court. Anyone familiar with the gamut of India’s courtly textiles cannot fail to see that this velvet furnishing is a unique and outstanding survivor. While historical Indian textiles in other techniques, which are deemed comparable to this textile in one or another respect, may appear before us once in a while, it is very unlikely that a goldwork embroidery of this age, quality and completeness will be seen again. For its formal design, purity of technique and skilled workmanship, this goldwork embroidery must take its place, in fact, among the remarkable early examples of the art, which have survived from the greater Islamic world.' Frieze Masters will run from 12–16 October 2022 at The Regent’s Park, London. This year, Prahlad Bubbar will present 'Connective Threads: Historical Masterworks of Textile Design foregrounding 20th century abstraction.' Visit Prahlad Bubbar's [website]( and [Instagram page](. Celebrating the vitality and global impact of a fashion scene as dynamic and varied as the African continent itself, this show explores the richness and diversity of African histories and cultures via photographs, textiles, music and visual arts by fashion creatives from over twenty countries. An Africa Fashion Conference takes place on 18–19 November 2022 with presentations on fashion on and from the African continent from the 19th century to today. African fashion and textiles are a recurring feature throughout the HALI archives. Narrow-strip woven cloths from the eastern Volta region of Ghana and Togo are the subject of an article by Duncan Clark in HALI 186, while HALI 174 features a review of Chris Spring's book, African Textiles Today.
