Austria Auction Company will hold its 'Fine Antique Oriental Rugs XXXVIII' sale on 21 September 2024

[View this email in your browser]( Austria Auction Company will hold its 'Fine Antique Oriental Rugs XXXVIII' sale on 21 September 2024 at 4pm CEST. The 218 lots can be previewed from 18–20 September from 11am–5pm and 21 September from 11am–4pm. One of the highlights is this palace sized Ushak ([lot 218]( detail), an impressive carpet of unusual size, which clearly demonstrates the long tradition of these magnificent pieces. Large-format medallion Ushak carpets were designed by court artists under Sultan Mehmed II (1432–1481) during the golden age of the Ottoman Empire and experienced continuous design evolution over the next 400 years. In the corners of this example we find quartered medallions, and additional medallions extend into the top and bottom, suggesting an infinite repeat pattern. Particular attention should be paid to the complex floral motifs within these medallions. These not only dramatically enliven the relationship with the elegantly restrained field but also cleverly reference another western Anatolian carpet tradition. Its name coined by philosopher and critic Yanagi Sōetsu to mean ‘the art of the people’, Mingei developed in response to rapid industrialisation, in dialogue with the work of William Morris and his contemporaries. The exhibition is showing at the William Morris Gallery in London until 22 September 2024. Two-thirds of the sixty objects on display in this exhibition, from the Denver Art Museum's permanent collection, have never been shown. It chronicles the activities of the Douglas Family of Evergreen, Colorado—steadfast donors of textiles. Frederic (Eric) H. Douglas (1897–1956) became the inaugural curator of Indian Art at the museum in 1929, driven by a deep appreciation for the art and cultures of indigenous peoples. The exhibition is showing until 5 January 2025. [Facebook]( [Instagram]( [Website]( [LinkedIn]( Copyright © 2023 Hali Publications, All rights reserved.
