[View this email in your browser]( The Austria Auction Company sale on 24 August at 3pm BST has 306 lots of antique rugs, carpets textiles and trappings, yet the number of pieces being sold is much higher since there numerous lots that include multiple items. This is a welcome scenario for avid collectors especially since there are no reserves, meaning that the opening bid price could secure any of the lots. While there are some textiles from Indonesia, South America and Europe, the vast majority of the pieces come from the traditional carpet belt countries with an emphasis on tribal and utilitarian weavings. The saddle and tent bags represent the important role that woven containers play in the life of the tribal and traditional communities that made these items in the 19th century, but utility is an equally important virtue shown in a number of flatweaves on offer. These include horsecovers, kilims used as multi-purpose covers within tents and of particular note is a group sofreh, which were effectively used as table cloths. As important as function was, animals had vital roles in these communities as providers of food, trade and of course in some cases providing the very fibres used to make these weavings. Therefore it is not unusual to find animals portrayed in woven designs, and this sale offers a brief glimpse of the different ways that beasts of burden and/or fable were shown. [Lot 207]( is a Khamseh carpet estimated at €1,600–2,000. It features four large lions in its corners, the extinct lions of Fars, alongside lots of chickens and sheep or goats throughout the field. The Kerman rug, [lot 182]( est. €1,400-2,000, offers a different type of depiction with a leopard, rabbits and monkeys helping to illustrate the story of Layla and Majnun. The Bakhtiari rug, [lot 181]( est. €1,600–2,000 mixes the tribal and classical depictions with small birds throughout and the unusual addition of deer in the pendants and secondary medallions. The Caucasian rug from Kuba, [lot 275]( est. €1,600–2,000, uses formal Persian imagery but in a bizarre depiction of Qajar soldiers and the shah on horseback in highly stylised field with equally strange animals. Lastly the depiction of animals in mythical form is best shown in the Tibetan rug, [lot 74]( est. €2,000–3,000, in which two dragons confront each other holding conch shells in their hand-like claws. These are but a few of the animal related weavings in the sale; to view the full catalogue please visit the link below.
