Udo Langauer’s Austria Auction Company will hold its 'Fine Antique Oriental Rugs XXXVI' sale on

[View this email in your browser]( Udo Langauer’s Austria Auction Company will hold its 'Fine Antique Oriental Rugs XXXVI' sale on 6 April 2024 at 4pm CEST at its Palais Breuner salerooms in Vienna. There will be many options for the well-informed bidder within a broad selection of 250 unique pieces, which can be previewed from 3 April–5 April from 11am–5pm and 6 April from 11am–4pm. One of the highlights in the sale is the Tibetan tiger carpet above ([Lot 150](. When Mimi Lipton published ‘Tigerteppiche aus Tibet’ in 1989, tiger rugs were a new discovery for most carpet lovers. They have always been rare and now are widely sought after, and symbolising power and energy, in Tibet are reserved for high-ranking monks or aristocrats. There are indications of Chinese influence in the small cosmic ocean borders and the lotus flowers in this example. Also included in the sale is a Pinwheel Kazak ([Lot 161](. Although Pinwheel Kazaks are one of the most uniform types of Kazak rugs, there are small variations that help define them. The first thing you notice about this example is that it is narrower than many others in both its overall width and its field. The carpet was sold at Sotheby's in London in October 1993 and is one of the few to vary in two field elements. Firstly, the central sun wheel only has three arms instead of four and secondly, the white base rosettes do not fill the field evenly. One is partially cut off at the bottom of the field and in the middle there are two places where the rosettes have been replaced by other tribal motifs. These individual features may indicate a slightly earlier date than usual. Another standout offering is a Dragon Sumakh ([Lot 166]( in which dominant X-Shapes in different colours dominate the field. In 19th-century examples, the forms in the field can be identified as overlapping lance-shaped leaves, while the dragons have faded into the background almost beyond recognition, represented only by the four yellow shapes around the central X. Within the leaves and in the field, there is a notable series of infill motifs, mainly drawn from a more nomadic repertoire. The entire composition exudes an exuberant power, while the dense, complex border holds the field together perfectly, balancing it and inviting careful consideration.
