[View this email in your browser]( Live Showroom Auction: 27 March, 10am ET Public Preview: 24–26 March, 11am–4pm ET Catered Exhibition Reception: 24 March, 12–4pm ET Material Culture continues to draw large and impressive mixes of antique, collectible and decorative rugs, carpets, kilims and trappings for its ongoing series of auctions under the rubric of 'Oriental Rugs from American Estates.' It is a sign of the times that many baby boomers are downsizing, making room for a younger generation of collectors, dealers and designers to fill the gap. While tastes may change, there is no denying the incredible artistry, craft and value that the rugs on offer in these auctions can represent. Take, for example, [lot 172]( a fine mansion-sized Ziegler Sultanabad carpet (ca. 1890) in an almost perfect square. The colour palette of subdued yet richly harmonious tones exudes an elegance of a high order. Coming from a private Columbus Circle estate collection in Manhattan, it was purchased a quarter of a century ago for an amount well into six figures (est. $30–40,000, start price $15,000). In a sale with many attractive room- and oversize carpets, two arrived at the last minute from local Philadelphia and Bucks County estates. These include another mansion-sized overall-pattern Sultanabad ([lot 169A]( in shades of variegated dark blue, in shabby chic style, yet still structurally sound (est. $2–4000, start price $1000). Also of note is a late 19th-century Serapi rug ([lot 166]( that was recently removed from the floor of a Philadelphia estate where it had sat since it was purchased by the family several generations ago. This rug features the sort of jewel tones that are only achieved by master dyers using natural dyes (est. $3–4000, start price $1500). On offer too, are two 19th-century Anatolian rugs, both in quite good condition and originating from a private Florida collection. One of these is a very attractive Konya long rug ([lot 50A]( est. $5–7000, start price $3000), and the other is an East Anatolian Kurd Yuruk rug ([lot 50B]( est. $2–2500, start price $1000). Both rugs indicate that the collector had a good eye and appreciated the beauty and variety of colours in Anatolian weavings. HALI readers and the public are invited to a catered live auction reception at Material Culture on 24 March from 12–4pm.
