What's the coolest way you've seen to tell time? [3602421454791242043.png] Wednesday, January 17, 2024 [Geneva Clock Is a Bit Unconventional >>]( Three Ways of Telling Time Whether your days are getting longer or shorter right now, time is of the essence when it comes to balancing all those things that must be done with the all hacks that are calling out your name. This week, we have for you three interesting ways of telling the time -- the Geneva Clock, the Droplet Watch, and the LED Watch. No matter what time of year it is, we've always got our eye on the weather. This week, we've got a classic weather station with modern looks, as well as a cloud tensegrity lamp that brings the storm indoors. And since the weather indoors can vary, why not build a smart enclosure for your 3D printer? Need a little bit of inspiration to get through the season? Look no further than the fine hacks below. And, if you make something cool, [be sure to let us know](mailto:tips@hackaday.com). Highlights from the IO POPULAR BITS [project thumbnail]( [Droplet Watch Uses Liquid for Hands]( What appears to be magic is actually called electrowetting. Here, the droplets for hour, minute, and second are driven independently in three concentric circles to show the time. An electric field modulates the angle of contact between the droplets and the hydrophobic surface. [project thumbnail]( [Cat Bowl Monitor Keeps Cats In Line]( When one cat is on prescription food and one isn't, you have to do something to keep the patient out of the regular food. This project uses facial recognition coupled with a commercial feeder to keep everyone eating what they're supposed to. [project thumbnail]( [Classic Weather Station Displays the Facts]( Using only one BME280 sensor, this weather station is able to monitor and display the classic three of home meteorology -- temperature, pressure, and humidity -- in style. This is all thanks to a TCA9548a multiplexer module that allows one Arduino to communicate with three OLED displays. Hack Chat LIVE CHAT WITH LEADING EXPERTS EVERY WEDNESDAY [Neutrino Hunters Hack Chat]( Patrick Allison will host [this week's Hack Chat](. It would seem to be a practical impossibility to detect something so small and elusive that it can zip right through the entire planet like it's not even there. That's what neutrinos are all about, and getting a bead on them takes the biggest of big science, like using the entire continent of Antarctica as a detector. Patrick Allison has done just that, and he'll slip into the Hack Chat this week to talk about the big engineering that makes the big science of neutrino hunting possible. [X-Ray Investigations Hack Chat]( Ahron Wayne will host [next week's Hack Chat](. We all know the medical value of X-rays and CT scans, and few of us would want to live in a world where doctors couldn't non-invasively peer inside our bodies. But medicine isn't the only place where X-ray imaging is valuable. Non-clinical applications for X-ray and CT abound, including lately the combination of CT imaging and machine learning to look inside carbonized papyrus scrolls from the ruins of Pompeii. This inspired Ahron Wayne to buy a used CT scanner and contribute to the Vesuvius Challenge competition by investigating simulated papyrus scrolls -- yep, he cooked scrolls in the oven and read them with a CT scanner. If that's not enough to get you to stop by the Hack Chat to hear what Ahron has to say, we don't know what will do it. [Trenton Computer Festival - March 16]( The longest-running computer festival in the world will return for its 48th year in 2024. We don't have a schedule this far out, but expect a full-day of talks and workshops, with a streaming component for those who can't make the trip to The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in person. [VCF East - April 5-7]( While we don't have much information yet, the The Vintage Computer Festival East is an absolute must-see event for anyone with a love of vintage hardware.
