Help wiggling fingers from a low-cost dynamometer Tuesday, August 1, 2017 Reteaching Your Body to Mo

Help wiggling fingers from a low-cost dynamometer Tuesday, August 1, 2017 [The Tribble Badge from DEF CON last weekend »]( Reteaching Your Body to Move By [Mike Szczys]( Exercise will make you stronger. This is true of physical rehabilitation as well, but when there is great loss of strength, specialized help is necessary for the best possible recovery. This means the help of a trained professional. What we'd love to see is more technology that amplifies the reach of those professionals. Sergei V. Bogdanov is doing just that with [his Dynamometer]( for post stroke rehabilitation. It's an [Assistive Technologies entry for the 2017 Hackaday Prize](. When a stroke victim has lost the use of a hand, they start with tiny movements on a long and difficult path to recovery. Sergei vision is a simple device to detect and display the movements of each finger. Information from the dynamometer is a more concrete way for patients to gauge progress and he thinks he can pull it off for under $100. We saw another incredible rehab-focused device last year at the Hackaday Superconference. Check out the [robotic assist Bodo Hoenen and his daughter built]( to strengthen her elbow. Friday: PCB MFG Hack Chat Join us this Friday, 8/4 at noon Pacific for a [Hack Chat on how Printed Circuit Boards are manufactured]( Jonathan Hirschman of PCB:NG will be our host for this week's chat. See you there! Highlights from the IO POPULAR BITS [NOMNOM: The Video Machine]( Mixing music samples takes on a new dimension when you're getting the samples from YouTube. NOMNOM takes YouTube samples and lets you sync the audio while showing the video in a thumbnail on screen. You've got to check out the video on this one! [RPi 9000]( We didn't get to live on space stations. But at least the "future" has let us build our own HAL9000. Inside you'll find a Raspberry Pi running Jasper for voice control. ArtBIT added MQTT support so that it can interact with the other devices around the house. [Raspbery Pi Jukebox Sound System]( Digital door locks and community music controllers are two of the custom features you'll find in pretty much every hackerspace. Here's the jukebox system that Nikolai Ovensen built for his. It's hanging out in a laser-cut plywood case with a Raspberry Pi touchscreen as the user interface. Featured Projects POPULAR BITS [Dementia-Friendly Music Player]( [Keyboard Controlled Treadmill Desk]( [pockeTETRIS]( [LED Cube Using Charlieplexing]( Live Events MEETUPS, CONFERENCES AND WORKSHOPS [Vintage Computer Festival West: Aug 5-6]( Head over to the Computer History Museum in Mountainview, California this weekend for VCF West. The event draws people who built what is now retro-computing hardware, like Hackaday's own Bil Herd who will be on the Commodore (the 8-bit years) discussion panel. Hackaday is a proud sponsor of the event and Joshua Vasquez will be on hand so flag him done and show off your own hardware projects.
