You have until August 15th to build a computer for the apocalypse. Go! [Digi-Key is a proud sponsor of the 2023 Hackaday Prize]( [3602421454791242043.png] Wednesday, July 5, 2023 [CRT Pi Portable Proves Cyberdecks Aren't Always Compact »]( Jack Back Into the Matrix Are you headed for the Sprawl or the Metaverse? It is dangerous to go alone -- you need a cyberdeck. What's that, you ask? It's a robust and portable computer system designed to help you navigate uncharted digital waters. What is a cyberdeck exactly? Well, that's the thing -- it's open to interpretation, but basically, it's a system with some kind of input (like a keyboard) and some kind of output (like a display), but sometimes more than one of each. After that, it's up to you to decide -- that's what makes [the 2023 Cyberdeck Challenge]( so exciting! You have from now until August 15th to properly define 'cyberdeck' on your terms, so head on over to Hackaday.io and fire up that soldering iron. We would be remiss if we didn't point to [Tinfoil_Haberdashery]'s early and stunning example of cyberdeckery, designed around an Intel NUC. Isn't it awesome? William Gibson thought so, too, and cited [Tom Nardi]'s coverage in 2019. How cool is that? Need some inspiration? Check out of a few of the early entries below, along with a few of our favorites from 2022. Highlights from the IO

[LoRa Messenger Is As Flat as They Get]( This ultra-thin purpose-built cyberdeck is only as thick as the FR4 plus the Raspberry Pi Pico it's based on. If you need to communicate on the go, this little board is the perfect solution that'll fit right into that cargo pocket. [project thumbnail](
[This 'Deck Reimagines the First Notebook]( In 2023, it's worth noting that this cyberdeck uses no 3D-printed parts at all, just a lot of Dremeling, X-acto knifing, and sandpaper. The internals look great, and host a Raspi 4 and a controller that lets [Don] use the original keyboard. Oh, and don't worry -- the shell came from a pile of spare pieces. [project thumbnail](
[PLANKuter Is Prototyping On the Go]( Have you ever wished you could do basic electronics wherever you wanted? Wish no more and build a PLANKuter. It's based on the LattePanda, and the user can access the header pins directly. Plus, there's a little drawer beneath the keyboard for components. Hack Chat
LIVE CHAT WITH LEADING EXPERTS EVERY WEDNESDAY [Today: 3D Printing Food Hack Chat]( Ellie Weinstein will host [this week's Hack Chat](. We'd all like to make artistic creations that we can east, but not everyone has the time or the talent. So perhaps we can leverage technology to help us out. That's just one of the rationales behind food 3D printing, which is what we'll be exploring with Ellie Weinstein. She's the CEO of Cocoa Press, where they're bringing chocolate 3D printing to the mainstream. It's not as easy as you might think -- there are plenty of nuances and engineering challenges when you're trying to print chocolate or any other kind of food. Make sure you stop by and check it out; it's sure to be a treat. [Next Week: Software for Satellites Hack Chat]( Jacob Killilea will host [next week's Hack Chat](. In space, everything is harder. It seems like everything you "send upstairs" has to be over-engineered compared to the stuff that stays down the gravity well. But what about software? Yep, that needs special engineering too -- after all, one little mistake, one uncaught exception, and millions or even billions of dollars worth of exquisitely crafted space hardware could become as useful as a brick. Jacob Killilea has made the rounds at a number of space concerns and knows what it takes to keep space hardware ticking, and we're excited to have him log into the Chat to talk about it.
