Enter today and you could win a $5,000 manufacturing grant! [Digi-Key is a proud sponsor of the 2023 Hackaday Prize]( [3602421454791242043.png] Wednesday, June 7, 2023 [Recreator 3D Makes Filament from PET #1 »]( Green Hacks Challenge Is On! Last year's Prize was all about hacking for the planet, and let's just say you all did not disappoint when it came to saving the world. Green Hacks is one of our favorite challenge categories, so naturally [we had to bring it back for the 10th anniversary of the Hackaday Prize](. This is your chance to do something for Mother Earth and pay her back for all she's given us. That could manifest in any number of ways, from [wind power]( to [recycling plastic](. You could focus on clean energy, smarter recycling, or waste prevention. Whatever you choose to do, get crackin', because you only have until 7AM PDT on July 4th to enter this round. We’d like to thank our sponsors in the Hackaday Prize, Supplyframe and DigiKey, but we’d also like to thank Protolabs for sponsoring the Green Hacks challenge specifically, and for donating a $5,000 manufacturing grant for one finalist. Need some inspiration? Check out a few of the entries we've received so far. Highlights from the IO POPULAR BITS [project thumbnail]( [An AI Honey Bee Swarm Detector]( This system predicts the arrival of incoming swarms so that beekeepers can then go look for them and give them a place to stay. They also alert the beekeeper whether a swarm has decided to live in a catch hive -- a temporary residence bees use while they scout for their next home. [project thumbnail]( [Solar Tracker Increases Panels' Yield]( This bite-sized solar tracker is meant for a balcony or the like, and uses linear actuators to follow the Sun. The idea is to charge smart phones and power banks, and at a low cost with minimal hardware. It also self-tracks without the use of GPS. [project thumbnail]( [Smart Plant Monitors Health and Sleeps Deep]( Do you suffer from a brown thumb? These beautiful plant tags host a suite of sensors to keep your plants healthy, while you both use a minimum of your available power. That's right; these tags will run for five to six weeks between charges. Hack Chat LIVE CHAT WITH LEADING EXPERTS EVERY WEDNESDAY [Today: Getting Started In Ham Hack Chat]( Mark Hughes and Beau Ambur will host [this week's Hack Chat](. The barrier to entry to the world of amateur radio has never been lower -- so why haven't you gotten your license yet? Seeing as you once had no choice but to build a radio to get on the air, ham radio is the OG hacker sport. This Hack Chat is for the ham curious, the fence sitters, and those who have maybe tried to get a license but fell by the wayside. Beau and Mark, both relatively new to amateur radio, will be here to lift you up and get you started on your amateur radio journey. Come and listen to many speakers and streamers, the latter of which will be moderated by our own Bil Herd. Be sure to stick around for the auction and, of course, all the awesome stuff for sale by the exhibitors. [Midwest RepRap Fest - June 23-25]( Probably the biggest, baddest thing to happen to Goshen, Indiana, the Midwest RepRap Festival is now in it's 11th year (!). Yes, it's still at the county fairgrounds, but they have a bigger building now. Even though they expect 1800 visitors this year, entrance is still free for general attendees. [VCF Southeast - July 28-30]( VCF Southeast takes place in Atlanta, GA this year, and although the speaker list is currently a work in progress, you can just bet that dozens and dozens of vintage computing enthusiasts are gathering up all the cool stuff they're going to show and/or have for sale. [DEFCON 31 - Aug. 10-13]( What is likely the world's most well-known infosec conference is back in-person this year in sunny Las Vegas. While this year's badge has yet to be revealed, do know that there is a SAO slot for customization, so don't forget your soldering iron. [East Coast RepRap Fest - Sept 30 - Oct 1]( Billed as 17,000 square feet of fun, the best part of the East Coast RepRap Festival sounds like the 3D Printed Derby. Yeah, as in, a Pinewood Derby but with 3D-printed cars. Get your tickets today!
