[Hackaday] Automate the Freight: The Robotic Garbage Man [Read article now »]( Badges, We Don't Need No Stinking Badges! By [Elliot Williams]( While you may not have needed a badge to wield a gun in the Wild West, if you're holding a hacker convention, the badge design is right up there on your list next to hotel bookings. But why let the conference organizers have all the fun? In the purest DIY hacker tradition, folks have taken to making their own alternative badges to show off their chops, and share in the thrills and chills of small-run hardware. [DEF CON]( coming up in a few weeks, is a big deal, and the hacker-built badge scene there is the most vibrant. We're stoked that the badge making community has shared their work with us. So far, we've featured the [Puffy Badge]( some [Blinky Bling]( and a [Hunter S. and Bender B.]( mashup. A badge is a perfect hardware-design sandbox because it's got to be small, reasonably affordable, and produced in decent numbers. If you and some friends want to try your hands at making something, you don't have to ask permission -- just dive in! Supercon! What's more def than a DEF CON? That would be Hackaday's own Superconference, which we [just announced]( this week. The [call for proposals]( just went out, so we can't tell you who's talking yet, but we can tell you it's going to be Super, and it's going to be November 11th and 12th in Pasadena, CA. This is our third Superconference, and the past two have sold out. The first round of early-bird tickets have also just sold out. At the risk of stating the obvious, [get your tickets now]( and start making plans to attend. The world's most involved hardware community gets together once a year. Come join us! Oh yeah, the badges. The [first Superconference badge]( was essentially just perfboard, and we were astounded by what was cobbled together out of the parts on hand and some solder. Last year, Voja Antonic [made a badge with a fantastic display]( and a small operating system, pushing the hacking fun into the firmware. Stay tuned for this year's! Hack Chat: What else, Badgelife! In the [Hack Chat]( this week, we've got [Whitney Merrill], [Karl Koschef], and some of the AND!XOR crew who are responsible for the Bender badges. And they'll be talking about: badges! What does it take to make a small-run electronic gizmo, design and test interactive firmware, all on a shoestring budget and short timelines? Come find out. 2017 Hackaday Prize July 24th is a big deadline for the [Hackaday Prize](. Both the Wheels, Wings, and Walkers and Best Product rounds end in just ten days. If you need that last minute jolt of adrenaline to push your entry through to perfection, you've only got two weekends left! Go, go, go! From The Blog [Bicycle Racing In Space Could be a Thing]( By [Steven Dufresne]( It’s 2100 AD, and hackers and normals live together in mile-long habitats in the Earth-Moon system. The hackers have figured out how to ride on the outside. [Read more »]( [Horns Across America: The AT&T Long Lines Network]( By [Dan Maloney]( How do you get phone calls across the US in the 1950s?
