When temperatures reach their extremes, it's time to bring on the hacks. [3602421454791242043.png] Wednesday, December 7, 2022 [30-In-One DEFCON 30 Badge Goes Where You Do »]( 'Tis the Season To Hunker Down and Hack Away No matter which hemisphere you're hunkered down in, take comfort in the knowledge that the solstice is upon us. Whether you're freezing your FETs off or it's so hot that you could fry a photoresistor on the sidewalk, the shortest/longest day is just a few weeks away. If you're like us, you're doing a lot of hanging out around the house, which ought to mean maximum time for project-building, right? We're pleased to report that the soldering iron has been staying hot around the Hackaday dungeon as this writer has been pursuing audio projects like [cigar box guitars]( and tin can microphones. [2022 Hackaday FPV Contest]( But to each their own, right? And that's the theme of this week's newsletter. There's no better time to hunker down and work on projects -- and if you're like us, you prefer to juggle several as it seems to be feast or famine. Oh, you're not inspired to build anything at the moment? Not even a [tin can microphone?]( Well, let's fix that. For starters, don't forget that we're in the middle of our 2022 FPV Contest, so be sure to check out [the entries we've seen so far]( for inspiration. What if sonics and avioncs aren't your thing? Take a look at some of the most awesome projects we've seen on Hackaday.IO recently: Highlights from the IO POPULAR BITS [project thumbnail]( [Cistercian Display Looks Great In RGB]( While the Cistercian counting system is capable of displaying any number from 0 to 9999 using only lines, why not do it in brilliant color? [project thumbnail]( [Weird GameBoy Mod Belongs In a Museum]( But why, you ask? Why not? [Solderking] throws their hat into the wild and wonderful ring of GameBoy mods with this 3-tier system that lets you have four games plugged in at once. [project thumbnail]( [Mushroom Control System For Humid Environments]( An array of sensors and a LoRa antenna allow remote monitoring of temperature, humidity, particle contamination, and C02 levels. Hack Chat LIVE CHAT WITH LEADING EXPERTS EVERY WEDNESDAY [Next Week: Battery Engineering Hack Chat]( Dave Sopchak will host [next week's Hack Chat](. Back in the day, pretty much every battery you could easily obtain was either carbon-zinc or alkaline. We've come a long way since then, with chemistries and materials that were the stuff of science fiction not that long ago, all in the service of getting more energy into less volume, to power our addiction to portable technology. And all of that progress came as it usually does: by solving engineering problems, by finding new methods and new materials, and by pushing the limits of what's possible. Dave Sopchak has been involved in these engineering feats, and is currently working on solid-state battery chemistries. We've asked him to stop by the Hack Chat to tell us a little about what's going on with battery engineering, so stop by with your questions.
