Hackaday Drives the Economy! [Hackaday] Why Satellites of the Future Will be Built to Burn [Read article now »]( Hackaday Made Me Do It By [Elliot Williams]( While countless medical studies have shown that reading Hackaday is good for you, there is one downside: it can be hard on your pocketbook. Or maybe it's just me. For a few months now, I've been watching more and more people designing 3D-printed parts using "Airsoft" BBs as the balls in custom bearing races. The tiny plastic spheres in question are intended to be ammunition, but are also nicely polished and decently round 6 mm spheres, if you're into that sort of thing. Larger and lighter than metal BBs, they're a perfect fit for use in 3D printed mechanisms. A [quick search of designs on Thingiverse]( will convince you that I'm not kidding. But I've managed to hold out until reading a post on Hackaday. In it, [AlwynxJones] designs [tank treads that use airsoft BBs as the pivots in a very clever way]( fitting into spherical holes in each link. And for me, that was the last straw. 2,000 neon-yellow plastic spheres arrived on my doorstep the next day for less than the cost of a mid-range hamburger. I'm heating up my print bed to try out some test objects as we speak. It's not like I don't already have enough projects on my to-do list, but I can't say I've ever regretted a Hacakday-inspired impulse purchase either. Everybody needs more microcontrollers and crazy sensors, right? Have fun reading!
