Summertime, and the Hacking is Easy [Hackaday] Learn to Count in Seximal, a Position Above the Rest [Read article now »]( Summertime is Convention-Time By [Elliot Williams]( It's (northern-hemisphere) summer. The days are long, the temperatures at their apex, and the hacker conferences are in full swing. Every two years, Hackers on Planet Earth (HOPE) takes over the Hotel Pennsylvania in downtown Manhattan. [Mike], [Brian], and [Tom] were there. We covered not only the [ever-popular social engineering panel]( where the panelists try to put the "con" in con in front of a live audience, and the [talk about archiving radio spectrum]( but also some hacks too! E-readers are great pieces of hardware shackled by lousy firmware. [Marc Juul] is [working on the fifth-generation Kindles]( and getting some real success. Hopefully this will keep some of the devices out of the landfill and in people's creative hands. We also featured [Tommy Johnson]'s [fantastic hologram-making apparatus]( in a cardboard box. Meanwhile, we're still working our way through footage from this spring's Hackaday Belgrade event. We got video of some of the [great badge hacks]( that took place, which you should definitely check out. The two-person shooter across two serially connected badges (Shoot My Valentine) was super fun! And if you're into drones, LoRa, or animal-borne sensors, you should really watch all of [Luka Mustafa]'s [talk on tech applied to ecology](. DEFCON is just around the corner, and the [European hackers are out camping](. Ah, summertime! Hack Chat: Football-Shaped Hardware In the Hack Chat this week, [Asaad Kaadan] will be demonstrating his [Hexabitz electronics prototyping platform]( which don't just look really cool, but also aim to be easy to use. The gimmick? Hexagonal and pentagonal boards with edge connectors make the boards modular, cheap, and cool. (We've always wanted to do this!) Come talk with [Asaad] about the design, integrating it all together, and where his vision for the overall system is going. From The Blog [Was the Self Driving Car Invented in the 1980s?]( By [Al Williams]( Self driving cars are the future, right? How about the past? [Ernst Dickmanns] got it done in 1986. [Read more »]( [Edwin Armstrong’s Battle for FM Radio]( By [Al Williams]( Edwin Armstrong is the reason we have FM radio, yet hubris and patent litigation drove him to jump out of a window, leaving his wife a millionaire.
