Esther Solomon Dear {NAME}, Iâm writing to you as Israelâs pro-democracy movement marks 17 consecutive weeks of unflagging, principled and powerful protests across the country, and as the Knesset reconvenes. The Netanyahu government, which already wallows in infamy as the most far-right, theocratic and hyper-nationalist coalition ever seen in Israel, is sending out deliberately opaque and contradictory messages. Prime Minister Netanyahu has officially frozen the progress of key legislation that would enfeeble Israelâs judiciary and democracy. At the same time, his justice minister and a whole host of other coalition ministers have declared, publicly, their commitment to the passing of this legislation, immediately and in full. That means we are only a procedural decision away from constitutional changes that would irrevocably change the face of Israel. Haaretz is the only English-language platform doing the hard work of covering and analyzing this dramatic, and fateful, period in Israelâs history from its own sources. We are informed by expert journalists in both Hebrew and English. We are on the ground, every day. We donât rely on press releases, rumors, sycophancy or agitprop. As you know, we offer an unrivalled view, from news to comment, of this struggle for Israelâs future. Israelâs national poet, Hayim Nahman Bialik, once wrote: âAll beginnings are hard, but harder yet is perseverance.â We at Haaretz are committed to ever-renewed efforts to describe and explain whatâs happening here in Israel, its repercussions for liberal democracy, for Israelâs minorities and for the Palestinians, for international relations and for relationships with Jewish communities worldwide. Iâm delighted that you are registered on the Haaretz.com site, and would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to [consider subscribing](. As a subscriber, you become part of this dedicated perseverance, and part of this unfolding story. Your commitment to our journalism has never been more important.
