Ephesus. Ca. 133-88 BC. AV stater (20mm, 8.43 gm, 12h). NGC MS 5/5 - 3/5]( On the heels of our Platinum Night auction in Denver just a month ago, we've pulled together another outstanding group of coins – nearly 4,000 in number – to offer in our [September 7-12 auction of World and Ancient coins](. While there are many reasons to get excited about this offering, we think diversity is its greatest asset. From ancient to modern, circulation strike to presentation proof, and valued from a few hundred dollars to many thousands, this auction truly has something for everyone. This auction kicks off with nearly 700 lots of Ancient Greek, Judaean, Roman and Byzantine coins. Highlighting our Signature section of Greek coins are a pair of rarities, [a beautiful gold stater of Ephesus]( and a hitherto unpublished [gold stater of Ionia, Magnesia]( one of only two surviving specimens thus far ever offered at auction. The Greek section also features long runs of Mint State Athenian "owl" tetradrachms, electrum hectes of Cyzicus, Mytilene and Phocaea, and Persian gold darics. Highlights of the Roman section include [a splendid early Republican didrachm]( a [choice denarius of the assassin Brutus]( a run of spectacular Augustus silver denarii featuring many rare portrait and reverse types, a charming [gold aureus of Lucilla]( and an exceptional offering of late Roman and Byzantine gold solidi, all graded Choice AU to Mint State or better by NGC. Within the World section, the selection of Russian coins is particularly notable, with a handful of proofs standing out. In addition to the many minor denominations, we present a remarkable run of proof Roubles dated 1831, 1842, 1851 and 1900; [the 1831 "wings down" piece]( with its attractive toning band over the obverse, is especially pleasing. Another proof Russian rarity is a [pattern 2 Kopecks of Nicholas I dated 1828](. The last time an example crossed the auction block, it realized far in excess of $20,000. [Back to Top](#top) []Seldom Seen Selections: Underrated 1908-D No Motto Indian Eagle [1908-D $10 No Motto MS66 NGC]( By congressional mandate, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added to Augustus Saint-Gaudens' designs for the eagle and double eagle part way through the year in 1908, the first year the designs were produced at the Denver Mint. A moderate mintage of 210,000 Indian eagles of the No Motto type was accomplished at the Colorado facility before the change was implemented. Unfortunately, few high-quality examples were saved by contemporary collectors, as the novelty value of the design had worn off the year before, when a large mintage was coined at the Philadelphia Mint. In addition, the Denver Mint technicians experienced some difficulty adapting their presses to the segmented edge collars used to impart the star edge devices during striking. Although they were able to figure things out eventually, the 1908-D No Motto Indian eagle is one of the most poorly produced issues of the series. Most examples seen have flat strikes and lackluster surfaces that tend to be heavily abraded. [Our Long Beach Signature Auction of US Coins]( features one of those rare and desirable exceptions to the rule. [This spectacular Premium Gem]( certified by NGC with only three certified finer by the two major services combined, exhibits a much better-than-average strike, especially on the reverse, where it shows fine definition in the feathers on the eagle's shoulder. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces are impeccably preserved and both sides radiate vibrant mint luster. Overall eye appeal is terrific. We expect intense competition from series specialists when this lot is called. [Back to Top](#top) []Website Tips: Tie Bids [website tips][website tips] Under certain circumstances, it is possible for more than one person to have the same bid on the same item. This is actually fairly common, since people will tend to have similar ideas about an item's value, often based on having access to the same reference materials. In any case where there is a tie bid, the earliest bidder in our records is credited with being the high bidder. What does this mean in practice? You need to pay attention when you complete your bid. Above are two different images from our website, both showing the results of $2 bids on the same item in the same auction. One of them congratulates the bidder for placing the high bid on the item. The other states that the bidder, with the same bid, has been outbid, and offers him the opportunity to place another bid. You may notice that on the version of the page where the bidder has been outbid, the current bid is the same thing as the bid he just placed. If you see that, it is a dead giveaway that you were outbid by an earlier bid of the same amount and simply lost a tiebreaker. An astute bidder will also note that the high bid is revealed to him in this case; any further bid he places would be guaranteed to become the high bid on the item. [website tips] Under certain circumstances it is difficult to tell from search listings whether you are the high bidder on an item. Search pages show the amount of the current bid without regard to any secret maximum bid. If the search page shows an amount less than your secret maximum bid, you are the high bidder. If it shows an amount more than your secret maximum bid, then you are not the high bidder. But if it shows an amount equal to your secret maximum bid? Look at the color of the bid. If it is green, you are winning. If it is red, you aren't. If it's black, then you haven't bid on the item – or the website doesn't know that you've bid on it, possibly because you haven't logged in. Make sure you check the color! [website tips] [website tips] MyBids will also always tell you whether you are the high bidder on an item, showing your bid in green if you're the high bidder and in red if you are not. Of course, MyBids is invaluable as a record for all your bids, not just the close ones, and our most astute bidders check this page on a regular basis.
