Iconic Pop Culture Items Include Apple, Back to the Future Shoes at Heritage Auctions
[Adidas X Apple]( Heritage Auctions will be the first major international auction house to offer collectible sneakers, surfboards, skateboard decks and street art together in one sale. The [June 11 sale title The Future is Now,]( will take place online and live in Beverly Hills.
"It's an exciting moment for Heritage as we undertake this initiative to bridge the gap and draw similarities between industries that have been heavily influenced by street culture and contemporary art," said Leon Benrimon, Director of Modern and Contemporary Art. "Our goal is to offer bidders a new platform where they can collect a diverse group of objects."
The title of the auction comes from the box of the [2016 Nike Air Mag, a sneaker made famous by Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future II]( and designed by sneaker icon Tinker Hatfield. The automatic lacing sneaker, a concept that first was conceived in 1989, was brought to life by Nike in 2016 and symbolizes the growth of the collectible sneaker market. Also in the auction is [the 2011 edition of the Nike Air Mag]( accompanied by its original box and hand-signed by Hatfield.
[Nike]( Another highlight from the sale is a rare pair of [Adidas x Apple sneakers from the 1990s](. One of few pairs ever produced, the kicks are made of white leather and feature the iconic rainbow Apple logo.
The Future is Now also features accoutrements of surf and skate culture, including collaboration boards by [Paul McCarthy]( John Baldessari, Kenny Scharf and Damien Hirst, among other notable contemporary artists. Street art is also prevalent in the sale with large-scale works by RETNA and Futura 2000 and favorites such as Keith Haring, Shepard Fairey, Sandra Chevrier and Banksy.
Heritage is proud to partner with StockX, the worlds' first "stock market of things," to provide expertise, support and authentication as Heritage makes its initial foray into sneakers. Currently estimated at $6 billion globally, the secondary sneaker market includes dozens of channels, including online marketplaces, apps, consignment shops, trade shows and more, but until today, never has had a true presence at auction.
"We're excited to partner with Heritage for The Future is Now, StockX Co-Founder and CEO Josh Luber said. "As StockX prepares to expand from a sneaker stock market to one for watches and handbags, as well, it's a perfect time to help Heritage - a leader in the luxury watch and handbag space - expand into sneakers."
A portion of sale proceeds will benefit the Greater Los Angeles chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Support also will be provided by Artsy, where collectors will be able to bid live and online on works in the sale.
