[View]( [Bill Ward Torchy Daily Comic Strip Original Art (Fort Hamilton, c. 1940s)]( Bill Ward Torchy Daily Comic Strip Original Art (Fort Hamilton, c. 1940s) Torchy finds herself being deployed with the boys of Company B in this gorgeous strip by her creator Bill Ward while he was an active member of the US Armed Services. The strip appeared in the Fort Hamilton base newspaper in Brooklyn, NJ. Ward's ability to draw lovely women would be the corner stone of the rest of his career, and it started with this series. This one is crafted in ink and white paint over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 20.5" x 5.75". There is toning; otherwise, in Very Good condition. [View]( [Al Jaffee MAD Magazine #162 Inside Back Cover ]( Al Jaffee MAD Magazine #162 Inside Back Cover "Fold-In" Painting Original Art (EC, 1973) One of the MADdest of the MAD-men, Al Jaffee, produced the ever-popular Fold-In feature that ran on MAD's Inside back cover since 1964. Drawing on a reader's natural inclination to crease and destroy the issue after discovering it was full of crummy jokes, Jaffee turned that into a "feature" for the mag. This great painting was produced in gouache with a matted image area of 16.75" x 21" (including the paste-up text sections). It is signed by Jaffee in the art area. Glass front framed to 21" x 25.25", it is in overall Excellent condition. So, it's time to cheer ourselves up with a look at some of our favorite circus comic book covers. [[Circus the Comic Riot #1 (1938)] Circus the Comic Riot #1 (1938)]( [[Captain America Comics #5 (1941)] Captain America Comics #5 (1941)]( This featured art by the likes of Will Eisner, Bob Kane and Basil Wolverton. We are disregarding the "creepy clown" subgenre for this list, but we can't disregard that long-running creepy villain The Ringmaster. [[World's Finest Comics #18 (1945)] World's Finest Comics #18 (1945)]( [[Comic Cavalcade #22 (1947)] Comic Cavalcade #22 (1947)]( Robin's tragic circus-based origin didn't stop DC from involving him in a bit of tomfoolery here. This title had more than one circus cover, but we like this one best, with the heroes as spectators. [[All Star Comics #54 (1950)] All Star Comics #54 (1950)]( [[Four Color #300 (1950)] Four Color #300 (1950)]( One of the last Golden Age Justice Society adventures. Donald Duck starred in "Big Top Bedlam." [Back to Top](#top) []One of the Largest Collections of Fantasia Art From animation drawings to production cels, concept art to storyboards, Heritage Auctions' July 1 [Animation Auction]( will offer one of the largest selections of artwork from the groundbreaking classic 1940 Walt Disney animated feature film Fantasia. No other piece highlights the rarity of this auction as well as Kay Nielsen's epic ["Night on Bald Mountain" Concept Painting]( (Walt Disney, 1940), which is expected to sell for $50,000. A member of the Tewa-Hopi tribe, Dan Namingha captures the imagery of his homeland and his people in [Butterfly Kachina, 1985]( (est. $6,000-8,000). Two beautiful Navajo rugs are presented in this auction. A [Navajo Pictorial Rug, circa 1925]( (est. $5,000-7,000) measures 82-1/2 by 56-1/2 inches, features three Yei figures and is in overall excellent condition. Joining this piece is a [Large Navajo Regional Rug, Two Gray Hills]( circa 1925 (est. $5,000-7,000) measuring 88-1/2 by 133 inches. [A Sioux Beaded Hide Double Saddle Blanket]( Both turn-of-the-century and contemporary Indian artworks comprise the Duncan Family Ranch Collection. Four generations of Hugh Duncan's family were ranchers in Wyoming, right in the proximity of Sioux and Cheyenne Indians. Duncan sold the ranch in 2006, but by then had a passion for collecting. A [Sioux Beaded Hide Double Saddle Blanket]( (est. $3,000-5,000) represents an old, turn-of-the-century piece from this collection, while a [Contemporary Cheyenne River Sioux Tipi Bag]( (est. $2,000-3,000) is a stunning example of the new. A collection from the heirs of Maj. Charles Beverly Ewing, a medical doctor in the U. S. Army also known as "The Fighting Doctor" highlights this auction. Ewing's accounts have been recorded and published in various formats, including Voices of Wounded Knee by William S. E. Coleman and Army at Wounded Knee by Samuel Russell. Pieces available from Ewing's heirs include [Sioux Beaded Hide Tipi Bag]( (est. $3,000-5,000), an [Apache Beaded Hide Strike-A-Light Pouch]( (est. $1,000-1,500), an [Arapaho Child's Beaded Hide Tobacco Bag]( and Family Archive (est. $400-600) and a [Sioux Quilled Hide Hair Ornament]( (est. $700-1,000). A number of Pre-Colombian pieces are featured from the estate Adeline Newman of Beverly Hills, California. The Newmans collected actively in the late 1960s and into the 1970s, when there was an enormous number of pieces coming into Los Angeles. Many exhibit excellent provenance, including [Nayarit Couple]( circa 200 BC-200 AD (est. $4,000-6,000), which includes a male figure that was illustrated in The Shaft Tomb Figures of West Mexico, by Hasso von Winning, 1974, Southwest Museum, Los Angeles. [A Teotihuacan Incensario]( Additional fine pieces from the Newman collection include a [Teotihuacan Incensario]( circa 400-600 AD (est. $10,000-15,000), a large and impressive [Chupicuaro Standing Female]( circa 400-200 BC (est. $6,000-8,000) and an [Olmec Baby]( circa 1000-400 BC (est. $5,000-7,000). Finally, the Tribal art section of the sale features selections from the collection of Dr. George Nelson Preston, a well-known African art scholar.
