[]Heritage Auctions' Reports $850+ Million Year
[Frank Frazetta At The Earth's Core Paperback Cover Painting Original Art (1974)]( Auctions]( announced sales of more than $850 million for 2016, the firm's third-best year ever, and nearly equal to its 2015 sales of $860 million. The results are a signal of the company's continuing dominance in the collectibles realm while other major auction houses recorded significantly lower sales volume for the same period.
Heritage's fine art category recorded a 28 percent leap in 2016 — in stark contrast to sales at its two largest competitors, both of which saw sales decline by approximately 30 percent.
"Through diversity, transparency and ardent attention to our clients, Heritage solidified and increased its commanding lead as the largest auction house founded in America," said Heritage Co-Chairman James Halperin. "And we're anticipating an even better 2017."
U.S. Coins remains Heritage's largest category, with 2016 auction totals exceeding $192 million, outselling all other numismatic auction houses combined by a wide margin according to the Professional Numismatists Guild annual survey, which shows Heritage maintaining its 56 percent market share.
World & Ancient Coins at Heritage realized about $47 million, while Currency posted over $29 million auction sales. Both categories also showed early signs of increased market strength at major Heritage auctions in Florida and New York which realized almost $70 million during the first 10 days of January 2017.
"Based on late 2016 and early 2017 auction results, the U.S. Coin Market remains upbeat, with prices now already 10 to 12 percent above the previous years' prices, on average," Halperin said. "We are already seeing extremely positive results from the first coin auctions of the year. Meanwhile, our plans to expand into other markets and geographic regions are on track."
Several of Heritage's other categories set records:
- Heritage's Sports auctions grew from $42 million in 2015 — already more than double any other auction firm's Sports Collectibles sales — to an incredible $57.4 million in 2016.
- Heritage's already-dominant Comics and Comic & Animation Art Auction category was another juggernaut, with total realized auction prices realized jumping from $34 million to a record $43 million, again outselling all other auction competitors combined.
- Fine Jewelry, Timepieces and Luxury Accessories at Heritage combined for a solid year as well, with more than $41.7 million in auction totals (more than $30 million in Jewelry and Watches and more than $10.7 million in Luxury Accessories), versus more than $26 million ($15 million in Jewelry and Watches & $11 million in Luxury Accessories) in 2015.
- Movie Posters posted sales of $7.95+ million vs. $7.4+ million in 2015.
- Luxury Real Estate saw sales increase to $19 million vs. $11.2 million for 2014 and 2015 combined.
- Wine recorded auction totals of $10.8 million in 2016 vs. $7.55 million in 2015.
Strategic growth continued as:
- The company expanded its national footprint, opening an office in Palm Beach, Florida, and a full-service showroom in Chicago, Illinois.
- For the first time, Heritage's clientele now includes more than 1 million online registered bidder-members, with nearly 90,000 new members added in 2016.
- The firm also maintained its online lead, with the total number of unique visitors to [HA.com]( holding steady at nearly twice the combined total number of unique visits the websites of Heritage Auctions' five closest competing web sites.
- Online sales (reported in early 2016 for 2015) were $344 million – surpassing all other auction houses; 2016 online sales figures are now being compiled and will be released soon.

[]Seldom Seen Selections: Registry-Grade 1919-D Quarter, MS66 Full Head
[1919-D 25C MS66 Full Head NGC]( The 1919-D Standing Liberty quarter is one of the biggest key dates in the series in high-grade Full Head. Full Head pieces appear at auction slightly less often than those of the 1919-S, and few Gem-quality coins have been offered in recent years. At the Premium Gem level, Full Head 1919-D quarters are extremely rare. We have offered such a coin on only seven previous occasions in the past two-plus decades, only one of which has been within the last 10 years. In our [February 16-19 Long beach Signature Auction]( we are pleased to offer [the first MS66 Full Head we have offered]( since our February 2012 Long Beach Signature sale, where a PCGS Secure coin realized $80,500. Before that, an NGC piece garnered $63,250 in our October 2006 Dallas Signature auction.
The rarity of this issue in high-grade Full Head is well-established. In Standing Liberty Quarters, fourth edition, J.H. Cline calls the 1919-D "one of the most underrated dates and mintmarks in the whole series in MS65/67, Full Head." NGC and PCGS combined list only nine representatives at the Premium Gem Full Head level. Only one coin is finer, the MS67 Full Head piece from the Just Having Fun Collection, which realized nearly $150,000 in that August 2012 Stack's/Bowers auction.
This coin, graded by NGC, is fresh to the market for this grade. Collectors familiar with the often deficient strike of the 1919-D quarter will appreciate the presence of only minor softness on the shield rivets and the leading edge of the eagle's left (facing) wing, with no other distinct weakness. Liberty's head shows separated leaves and a bold hairline. The date is razor-sharp, and the stars are well brought up. A loupe reveals some faint incompleteness along the left and right obverse border beads. The entire design is softly illuminated by satiny luster that shows a hint of pale champagne color, and careful scrutiny of the surfaces fails to uncover a single noteworthy abrasion. With only one finer piece reported, it is difficult to imagine a better opportunity for the advanced Registry Set collector to acquire this conditionally rare Denver issue in a showcase-worthy grade.

[]Website Tips: Editing Individual entries in MyCollection
If you've ever been to HA.com's MyCollection, you've undoubtedly seen some of the great features, such as:
- All purchases from Heritage auctions added automatically
- Up to date valuation of all US coins
- Set your own Buy Now price for items from Heritage auctions
- Organize your items into collections and subdivisions of your choosing
- Handy wizard for quickly entering lots of US coins at the same time
- Add PCGS, NGC and ANACS coins by scanner
But once a coin has been entered, there are reasons that you might want to change some of the information. To do so, click on the coin in your MyCollection listings. This will open a new page, covering only the specific coin. Here is a guide to what you can do:
- Collection: Click on the link if you want to move the coin to another collection – even if the collection doesn't exist yet
- Service: If the service is wrong, change it here. This change will appear on the main listings.
- Your Reference Number: If you have your own cataloging system or want to enter a brief visible note on the coin, add it here.
- Amount paid: Add or change the amount paid for the coin. This is useful if you want to add sales tax/shipping, or if you're adding material that you didn't buy from Heritage.
- Your Value: This is an override value to the automatic value we provide for US coins, and it is included in the full value of the collection printed on the collection listings. This feature is especially useful for world coins and varieties that are not individually valued.
- Date Acquired: Heritage provides this information for all coins we add to your collection. If you like, add this for coins you bought from other sources.
- Grade: The numerical grade of the coin, ranging from Poor-1 to Mint State (or Proof) 70. This will appear in the collection listings, and all value calculations are based on this grade.
- Quantity: If you have more than one. This is useful if you have multiples of the same coin, often in roll quantity. Not recommended for slabbed coins. Note that the calculated value and the Your Value entry are based on a single coin, then multiplied by the quantity.
- CertID: The certification number of a slabbed coin. This number, combined with the grading service, uniquely identifies the coin.
- PCGS No: The PCGS Index number for the coin. Changing this will allow you to change the date, denomination, designation (such as Red or Prooflike), or finish (such as proof) of the coin without having to create a completely new entry. All calculated values are based on this index number.
- Source: Where you bought the coin. This is added automatically for all coins purchased in Heritage auctions; you may wish to add it for other coins.
- Coin Notes and Misc. Notes: Two fields where you can keep notes about the coin.
- Description: This is the description of the coin that displays in the collection listings. If you wish change what the listings say, edit it here.
- Image One and Image Two: Places to keep images of the coins. Obverse and reverse images should be added automatically for coins purchased in Heritage auctions. If you wish to add images for your other items, you can browse for the proper image.

Evel Knievel, Olga Korbut Memorabilia Headline February Heritage Platinum Night Sports Auction
[Evel Knievel]( Heritage Auctions will burnish its reputation as the leading purveyor of direct-from-the-source sports collectibles in its upcoming [Platinum Night Auction]( with its presentation of personal keepsakes from 1970s sports icons Evel Knievel and Olga Korbut, whose memorabilia is expected to realize six-figure returns in an event expected to soar past $10 million.
The auction, which will close Feb. 25-26 in "Extended Bidding" format – meaning the bidding will stay open at least for another 30 minutes after any bid – has become the most anticipated semi-annual sale in the sports collectibles community, and features the most important and expensive relics in the hobby.
"Hobbyists have been waiting 40 years for the chance to own Knievel and Korbut treasures," Heritage Sports Collectibles Director Chris Ivy said. "We are thrilled to be the venue to present them to the collecting world."
Knievel captured the sporting world's imagination through his daring motorcycle jumps and his unsuccessful attempt at crossing the Snake River Canyon in a custom-made rocket for a national television audience. He passed away in 2007, and his collection – highlights of which include the [Motorcycle Leathers Knievel wore in 1972-73]( and his [Famous Diamond-Studded Walking Stick with a Hidden Liquor Compartment]( – is consigned to auction by his family. Korbut captured the hearts of an international audience through her dominance in the 1972 Munich Olympics gymnastics competition, and her subsequent appearance in the Montreal Games four years later. Korbut personally consigned her collection, which includes five of her [Olympic medals]( (est. $100,000).
The balance of the sale features the typical array of top-end trading cards and memorabilia. Multiple high-grade examples of the most coveted post-WWII card of them all, the [1952 Topps Mickey Mantle]( lead the charge. Also on offer are spectacular PSA Mint 9 rookie cards of Hall of Famers [Jim Brown]( (est. $300,000), [Bart Starr]( (est. $250,000) and [Satchel Paige]( (est. $100,000). The finest [T206 Cobb/Cobb Back]( (est. $300,000) to find its way to the hobby's auction block will tempt the Tobacco Era enthusiast.
Highlights from the memorabilia offerings include the [New York Yankees jersey worn by Mickey Mantle as he clubbed the penultimate home run of his career]( – number 535 – after 1968 Cy Young Award-winning pitcher Denny McLain tipped his pitches as a parting gift to the retiring legend, and the only [game-used bat that has been definitively attributed to Ted Williams' historic 1947 Triple Crown season]( (est. $200,000).
One of two known examples of the massive [tri-fold Piedmont Tobacco baseball advertising sign]( will serve as the first appearance of a complete example on the hobby's auction block, discovered recently after a century's seclusion in the wall of an old cigar shop, and two [original LeRoy Neiman oil paintings]( (est. $100,000) will protect Heritage's status as the leading source for the work of the leading figure of the sports art genre.
