[$5.8 million sells in Summer FUN auction]
[1943 CENT Struck on a Bronze Planchet XF45 PCGS](
[1943 CENT Struck on a Bronze Planchet XF45 PCGS]( The hugely popular copper 1943 cent was the big story as Heritage's [July 11-14 Summer FUN Signature Auction]( realized in excess of $5.8 million. The auction was held in Orlando in conjunction with the summer Florida United Numismatists convention. All prices include a 20% Buyer's Premium.
In 1943, the United States Mint changed the composition of the cent from the usual 95% copper alloy to zinc-plated steel. These steel cents were made by the hundreds of millions and, despite the fact that they are much different in color than other cents, carry very little value today. However, a few older blank planchets made their way into coining presses, and the resulting 1943-dated bronze coins, technically error pieces that were struck on the wrong planchet, are highly sought-after today. This auction featured [one such piece, minted in Philadelphia and graded XF45 by PCGS](. Likely fewer than twenty of these Philadelphia 1943 bronze cents are known today, and this one brought its consignor a cool $186,000 hammer price.
This auction contained several high quality early half eagles, led by a [1804 piece with a Small 8 over a large 8 in the date. Graded MS63 by PCGS]( this piece was exceeded in numerical grade by only four pieces at both major grading services combined. It sold for $54,000. A [1811 half eagle, graded MS64 by PCGS]( is unsurpassed in numerical grade and brought $40,800.
A few of the additional highlights of this auction included:
- [1776 Continental Dollar, CURRENCY, Pewter, EG FECIT, AU55 NGC. Newman 3-D](
Sold for: $39,600
- [1891 $20 AU53 PCGS](
Sold for: $36,000
- [1929 $20 MS63 PCGS](

[]Seldom Seen Selections: 1776 New Hampshire Copper
[1776 COPPER New Hampshire Cast Copper, VG10 PCGS. W-8395, R.6](
[1776 COPPER New Hampshire Cast Copper, VG10 PCGS. W-8395, R.6]( Our upcoming [August 13-20 ANA Signature Auction]( will feature, among many other highlights, an example of the [1776 New Hampshire Cast Copper, graded VG10 by PCGS](. This example is plated in Crosby, in the Guide Book, and in the Whitman Colonial Encyclopedia , and likely elsewhere. Although this variety is estimated at "URS-5 or 6" in the Whitman Colonial Encyclopedia, suggesting a population in the range from nine to 32 pieces, we suspect the actual population is less than nine. This is only the second example we have handled, and is slightly finer than the Newman coin that we offered in November 2014, and again in July 2015. That piece, PCGS certified Good 6, realized $94,000 in each appearance. This coin from the Garrett Collection is the only example that appears in the Stack's Bowers online archives.
The New Hampshire House of Representatives considered a copper coinage issue early in 1776 and directed William Moulton to make up to 100 pounds weight of these copper coins that depicted a pine tree and the words AMERICAN LIBERTY on the obverse, and a harp in a plain field on the reverse. The original legislation called for the date, 1776, to appear on the reverse.
This piece has splendid golden-brown color with hints of olive patina. The surfaces are lightly porous, a result of the casting process when these pieces were made. An old vertical scratch appears in the right obverse field, but otherwise, this is a lovely example of the rare New Hampshire copper.

[]The Anti-Counterfeiting Educational Foundation (ACEF) Assists In Another Counterfeiting Conviction
Minnesota coin dealer Barry Ron Skog, 68, was sentenced July 9th to 30 months in federal prison for carrying out a counterfeit coin fraud scheme in multiple states. In addition, Judge Wilhelmina M. Wright, U.S. District Court in St. Paul, Minn., ordered Skog to pay restitution to his victims. Based on the evidence obtained during the investigation, authorities believe there may be additional victims who have not yet been identified. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Minnesota Commerce Fraud Bureau at 651-539-1617. Callers may remain anonymous. The Minnesota Commerce Fraud Bureau and the Burnsville (Minn.) Police Department conducted the investigation that led to Skog's arrest. Two members of the Anti-Counterfeiting Educational Foundation's Anti-Counterfeiting Task Force assisted with the investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Manda M. Sertich, U.S. Attorney's Office in Minneapolis.
Skog pleaded guilty February 21 to one count of selling counterfeit coins and one count of mail fraud. He faced a potential maximum sentence of 15 years imprisonment on the count of selling counterfeit coins and a potential of 20 years maximum on the mail fraud count. A Minnesota federal grand jury had returned a six-count criminal indictment on April 10, 2018, charging Skog with five counts related to the sale of counterfeit coins and one count of mail fraud. With the plea agreement, the government agreed to dismiss four of the counts related to selling counterfeit coins.
According to the plea agreement Skog owned and operated a mail-order business called Burnsville Coin Company, through which he devised a scheme, from June 2012 through October 2015, to advertise and sell counterfeit coins by fraudulently representing that the coins were genuine and worth hundreds of dollars. The plea agreement described how through his business Skog posted advertisements in Numismatic News, a nationally circulated hobby publication.
"When potential buyers responded to the advertisements, the defendant often mailed them, via the U.S. Postal Service, lists of additional available coins for purchase," the plea agreement stated. It noted that when Skog communicated with victims, he would often represent himself as "Ron Peterson" and claim to be an employee of the Burnsville Coin Company, when in fact there were no owners or employees of the company other than Skog.
The plea agreement stated that Skog sold counterfeit coins to at least 12 separate victims and fraudulently obtained approximately $57,524.29. It noted that he "also intended to create additional loss by advertising for sale 275 additional counterfeit coins at an advertised sale value of approximately $235,000."
Collectors Universe won a default judgment against Skog in April 2011 in which a federal court issued an order permanently enjoining Skog from manufacturing and importing counterfeit Professional Coin Grading Service holders. The order also enjoined him from selling any coin, real or counterfeit, in counterfeit PCGS holders. Collectors Universe is the parent firm of the PCGS.
The civil lawsuit was filed on Dec. 7, 2010, in the United States District Court, Central District of California, and accused Skog and his coin business of selling during the previous four years counterfeit rare coins not marked COPY and housed in counterfeit PCGS holders, known as "slabs," made to order from Chinese manufacturers.

Shoot for the Moon: One-of-a-Kind Meteorite Pistols Could Bring $1 Million+ In Heritage Auctions' Nature & Science Auction
[Model 1911 Meteorite Pistol Set]( A one-of-a-kind set of [Model 1911 Meteorite Pistols]( is being offered in Heritage Auctions' [Nature & Science Auction]( July 20 in Dallas. The auction, celebrating the Golden (50th) Anniversary of the first man to walk on the moon, features the most impressive collection of large Meteorites and Gold ever offered at auction.
"The pistols are made almost exclusively from the Muonionalusta Meteorite, which is likely the oldest known meteorite on Earth," Heritage Auctions Nature & Science Director Craig Kissick said. "They are a spectacular lot for the most serious collectors, an opportunity that comes along once in a lifetime, but they're not the only appealing lot. The lots we're offering represent some of the largest known lunar and Martian Meteorites ever offered in the same sale."
The .45-caliber pistols (estimate: $1,000,000-1,500,000) are fully functional, having fired 35 rounds each, although the metallic content was not designed for them to be everyday sidearms. The pistols were designed by gunsmith Lou Biondo of Business End Customs. Each is a right-handed gun - one a GI model, the other a Custom model. They are made from the Muonionalusta Meteorite, which fell in Sweden probably about a million years ago and was discovered in 1906; it is likely the oldest Meteorite on Earth, dated to about 4.5 billion years.
The auction includes two Meteorites from Mars, each of which carries a pre-auction estimate of $500,000-700,000. Found in 2018, [NWA 12262 Martian Meteorite Martian (shergottite)]( is a one-of-a-kind offering, the main mass (3.2 kilograms / 7 pounds) of the Meteorite that is one of the largest pieces of Mars on Earth. There are just 235 classified Martian Meteorites and less than 300 pounds of Martian material on earth, meaning anything from the Red Planet is rare, and dramatically increasing the demand for a sample like this. [NWA 8159 Martian Meteorite Martian (augite basalt)]( was launched from the surface of Mars as a result of impact between the planet and other Meteorites. Consider that the 235 Martian Meteorites make up less than .004 percent of all known Meteorites, making it impossible to oversell the scarcity of examples like these. The Meteoritical Bulletin lists two meteorites from Mars that exist all by themselves, one of which is NWA 8159, which yielded this extraordinary sample.
[NWA 12335 Martian Meteorite Martian (shergottite)]( (estimate: $300,000-500,000) is a one of the largest (2.29-kilogram) Martian Meteorites ever discovered, very similar in composition to the famous Shergotty Martian Meteorite for which the variety was named. Weighing more than five pounds, this sample tells the story of the early geological history of Mars. Fusion crust has mostly disintegrated, but relict sections show flight markings and direction. This is the largest piece of NWA 12335 in existence and accounts for a significant portion of the total of all Martian material on Earth.
[NWA 8641 Lunar Meteorite: Large Piece of the Moon Lunar (feldspathic breccia)]( is a matchless end piece of a lunar Meteorite that was ejected as a result of an asteroid colliding with the lunar surface. The sample (estimate: $250,000-350,000) bears significant similarity to several lunar samples that returned to earth by Apollo astronauts, but those are the property of the U.S. government and controlled by NASA or at the Smithsonian. Less than 0.5% of all recovered Meteorites are lunar, and there is less than 750 pounds of lunar material on earth, making the moon among the most rare and exotic substances on Earth.
The auction also features an exceptional array of Gold, including:
- [Crystallized Gold Eagle's Nest Mine (Mystery Wind Mine)]( is a spectacular specimen that stands out even among Gold mined from its famous locality of origin. This impressive sample (estimate: $200,000-300,000) weighs 9.9 troy ounces and measures about 6 inches in length.
- Another dazzling specimen that measures more than 5-1/2 inches in length is a [Crystallized Gold Round Mountain District]( (estimate: $120,000-180,000). Weighing in at more than 20 troy ounces, it features a highly textural surface with sharp, granular crystallization from its famous locale in Nevada.
- A [Gold Nugget Bendigo Goldfields]( (estimate: $100,000-150,000) is one of fewer than 300 nuggets that weighs in at 50 or more troy ounces. This sample tips the scales at 50.7, which automatically qualifies it as an undeniable rarity. But its allure is increased by its powder horn shape that could make it a stunning centerpiece of any collection. The majority of all Gold ever mined is refined, so natural nuggets like this one are absolute rarities.
Other top lots include, but are not limited to:
- [NWA 12368 Lunar Meteorite Lunar (feldspathic breccia)]( - estimate: $120,000-180,000
- [Gold nugget Australia]( - estimate: $60,000-80,000
- [Gold Nugget Ballarat City, Victoria, Australia]( - estimate: $50,000-70,000
