[Rarities up for bidding soon in ANA World and Ancient Coins Platinum Night]
[IONIA. Ephesus. Phanes (ca. 625-600 BC). EL stater (23mm, 14.14 gm). NGC (photo-certificate) VF 4/5 - 4/5](
[IONIA. Ephesus. Phanes (ca. 625-600 BC). EL stater (23mm, 14.14 gm). NGC (photo-certificate) VF 4/5 - 4/5]( As our most prestigious venue of the year, Heritage's Platinum Night auctions consistently prove to be among the most anticipated sales in the hobby, and [this year's selections presented at the ANA World's Fair of Money® in Rosemont, IL on August 15th]( are no exception. Along with the fantastic pieces to be sold as part of the Cape Coral Collection of German 3 Marks and the George H. Cook Collection of Canadian coinage, here is a peek at what lies in store.
Our selection of coins available from across the ancient world is truly staggering. From Greek masterpieces, like the [Syracuse Decadrachm by Euainetos]( and [Selinus Tetradrachm]( both engraved in Fine Style, to the [Roman Imperatorial AU-certified Labienus Denarius]( and the [Byzantine Mint State Alexandria Solidus of Justinian I]( the sheer quality, rarity and eye appeal will make even the most advanced of collectors sit up and take notice. Not to be missed is one of the earliest recorded coins with an inscription-[the Phanes Stater from Ionia]( coin that always elicits spirited bidding when crossing the auction block. One of the most anticipated lots of the evening will be the unpublished [4-1/2 Solidi of Constans](. Gold multiples are always exciting; however this one is made even more so by filling in a historical gap, being the companion to the known specimen for Constantius II.
The coins of both Brazil and Great Britain frequently comprise many of the core offerings in any Heritage world numismatic auction, and for Platinum Night these reach the peak of desirability. From the period of Portuguese colonialism comes an incredibly handsome ["Sabara" gold ingot dated 1814]( standing as a relic of the 19th-century Minas Gerais Gold Rush. Produced less than a decade later, Brazilian collectors will surely be thrilled to see an example of the celebrated [Coronation 6400 Reis of Pedro I from 1822](. The first coin struck in an independent Brazil, this giant of the series is thought to be one of only nine in private hands and is the second finest we have ever offered. Finally, at the tail end of the country's gold production comes an [MS64 1922 10000 Reis]( of just 6 struck, and tied for the finest known.
Perhaps the crowning jewels of our British section are two presumably unique patterns from the workshops and cabinets of two of the nation's most famous engravers-Benedetto Pistrucci and William Wyon. Responding to the same need for a new Crown design after the Great Recoinage of 1816, both the [1817 "St. George and the Dragon" Pattern Crown]( and the [1817 white metal Proof Piefort Pattern "Three Graces" Crown]( from George III's reign serve as true testaments to their respective engravers' skills, and come extremely well provenanced. From earlier in George's reign we are also excited to offer an example of Tanner's incredible [1768 Pattern 2 Guineas, graded PR64 by NGC]( and presently tied as the finest certified representative of this early Georgian masterpiece.
Drawing from a different sector entirely, the Allen Moretti Swiss Collection brings what is certainly the most extensive series of Swiss rarities we have ever handled, as well as an array of European gold types that not only rarely come to market, but are also very seldom encountered outside of European auctions. Chief among the selections here are a massive [Lucerne 1714 10 Ducat certified MS63 by NGC]( a [gold Sardinian 5 Doppie of 1786]( and a [1694 Papal Quadrupla]( along with many hammered issues from Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.
This auction will open for bidding soon at [coins.HA.com](

[]Seldom Seen Selections: Select 1804 Small 8 over Large 8 Half Eagle
[1804 $5 Small Over Large 8, BD-7, R.4, MS63 PCGS. CAC]( [1804 $5 Small Over Large 8, BD-7, R.4, MS63 PCGS. CAC]( Our July 11-14 Summer FUN Signature Auction features a [PCGS-graded MS63 example of the 1804 half eagle]( variety BD-7. At R.4, this is the most collectible variety of the three 1804 Small Over Large 8 half eagles (the variety is better described as Normal 8 over Large 8). The upright of the E in STATES is over the space between two clouds. The obverse is heavily clashed, and the reverse shows a crack from the eagle's left (facing) wing through the ribbon to the D in UNITED.
John Dannreuther estimates 100 to 150 pieces extant, but only a small handful compare to this Select offering. A mere four pieces have been certified in finer grades by the major grading services combined - two coins each at NGC and PCGS, all of which graded MS64.
Lightly frosted olive-gold surfaces are inarguably natural. The devices show a strong overall impression with a few areas of localized softness. Heavy as-made adjustment marks occur above MERIC. Q. David Bowers wrote in 2011 that this coin "exemplifies high quality and nice eye appeal." We wholeheartedly agree.

[]Website Tips: Buy Now and Minimum Offer for Make Offer to Owner lots
If you are participating in our Make Offer to Owner program, we have now made it possible for you to select both a Buy Now amount and a Minimum Offer amount on items that are eligible for the Make Offer to Owner program. You can set the minimum offer to anything you want, as long as it is at or above the minimum.
[tips-1]
By clicking on the link to "Change the Minimum Offer amount and/or set your own Buy Now price", a window on the page will open up, allowing you to either add/change the Buy Now price, or to add/change a minimum offer. This allows you, if you like, to specify both a Buy Now price and a Minimum Offer price; for instance, you can set a Buy Now price of $1,500, but can still choose to be notified of any offers above $1,300.
[tips-2]
Items with both a Buy Now price and a Minimum Offer price are distinguished in the search results by having both the Buy Now from Owner icon and the Make Offer to Owner icon visible. Once on the item page, the would-be buyer can choose between Buying Now at the designated price or Making an Offer.
[tips-3]
[tips-4]
To remove a lot from Buy Now status, just blank out the Buy Now amount, and add a minimum offer amount if you choose. If both the Buy Now and Minimum Offer boxes are blank, then you will be notified of any offers above the default minimum.

Additional strips will be auctioned over the coming years, with the second batch scheduled for November.

[Monthly Fine and Decorative Art Auctions]( Online Fine & Decorative Arts Auction - July 11
Our [July 11 Online auction of Fine & Decorative Arts]( includes additional 19th-century drawings from the [estate of Neal Glass and Kerry Betensky](. These sheets originate from an immense corpus of over 12,000 drawings assembled into a series of albums in the later 19th century by Giovanni Piancastelli (1845-1926), a painter as well as then-Director of the Galleria Borghese in Rome. During Piancastelli's period of activity, collecting drawings on this scale was not uncommon, particularly for a figure with close ties to an artistic community such as he had. Many of the artists represented were figures Piancastelli knew personally, and who held teaching positions at the Academy of San Luca in Rome. While the fate of Piancastelli's entire drawing collection is unknown, the first batch was sold in 1901 to the American Hewitt sisters, Sarah and Eleanor, who were forming the Cooper-Hewitt Museum in New York City. This is a nice opportunity to enjoy and own part of the well documented Piancastelli collection.
Happy Bidding!
