Heritage Auctions' Coin Newsletter [Read this newsletter online]( [Heritage Auctions]( [Coin News]( In This Issue: • [Bid on US Coin Treasures in the Long Beach Auction](#collector-a) • [Seldom Seen Selections: Gem Proof 1837 No Stars Dime](#collector-b) • [Website Tips: Take Charge Of Your Email Preferences](#tips) • [Help Wanted: Heritage's Coin Sales Department is expanding](#collector-e) • [Around Heritage Auctions](#around-1) • [This Week's Top Ten](#top10) • [Is It Time To Sell?](#sell) • [Current Auctions](#current) May 14, 2019 [Bid on US Coin Treasures in the Long Beach Auction] [1797/5 $5 Large Eagle, 15 Stars, BD-7, High R.6, MS61 PCGS]( [1797/5 $5 Large Eagle, 15 Stars, BD-7, High R.6, MS61 PCGS]( The [June 6-9 Long Beach Signature Auction]( is open for bidding now! Continuing our long association with the Long Beach Coin and Collectibles Expo, this auction boasts over 2500 lots split into four sessions, with the finest lots scheduled to cross the auction block on the evening of Thursday, June 6 at the Long Beach show. Outstanding gold and copper issues mark the offerings in this auction. A [1797/5 half eagle with the Large Eagle reverse, graded MS61 by PCGS]( is one of an estimated 12-16 examples of the BD-7 variety of this date, the only collectible 1797/5 Large Eagle variety. A [1813 half eagle, graded MS64+ by PCGS]( and with CAC endorsement, is an outstanding example of a type coin often used to represent the elusive Capped Bust Left half eagle type. While uncirculated examples are sometimes available, Choice and finer coins are difficult to come by and bring outstanding prices whenever offered. The 1787 Immunis Columbia copper is a mysterious issue whose origins are unclear, but which circulated as money in colonial America. We offer in this auction [the single finest certified example at either major grading service]( graded MS66 Brown by PCGS, an attractive example certainly bound for an outstanding Colonial collection. A much more modern copper treasure is the 1909-S VDB cent, the lowest mintage coin in the entire Lincoln Cent series, and a goal for cent collectors of all stripes. While available in most grades for a price, at the MS67 level it becomes truly rare. The spectacular [PCGS-graded MS67 Red example]( in the Long Beach auction is simply unsurpassed in numerical grade at either of the major grading services, and it is sure to be the objective for a knowledgeable Lincoln Cent specialist. An unusual feature of this auction is [The Jack Royse Collection of Hobo Nickels](. To our knowledge, nearly all of the nickels in this collection have not appeared at public auction in at least three decades, and perhaps never, with the majority of the carvings by Bert Wiegand and "Bo" Hughes. Just a few of the additional highlights of this auction include: - [1917-S 5C MS67 NGC]( - [10C Large 8, JR-4, MS64 NGC]( - [1837 10C No Stars, Large Date, PR66 NGC]( - [1889-CC $1 MS62 Prooflike PCGS]( - [1839-D $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS]( - [1875 $2 1/2 PR65+ Deep Cameo PCGS]( - [1908 $5 PR67 NGC]( - [1923 $20 MS66 PCGS]( - [Justh & Hunter Gold Ingot. 266.97 Ounces]( Bid on the lots in this auction now at [coins.HA.com]( [Back to Top](#top) []Seldom Seen Selections: Gem Proof 1837 No Stars Dime [1837 10C No Stars, Large Date, F-101, R.7, PR66 NGC]( [1837 10C No Stars, Large Date, F-101, R.7, PR66 NGC]( Chief Engraver William Kneass suffered a stroke before he could finalize the design for the Seated Liberty motif, which replaced the Capped Bust design on U.S. silver coinage in the late 1830s. The talented Christian Gobrecht took over the project and completed the design, based on earlier contributions from Kneass, Thomas Sully, and Titian Peale. The Seated Liberty obverse design appeared first on the famous Gobrecht dollars in 1836, followed by the dime and half dime in 1837, the quarter in 1838, and finally, the half dollar in 1839. Gobrecht's initial obverse design was a masterpiece of simplistic beauty, with no stars around the border, giving the coin an uncluttered, medallic look that creates intense aesthetic appeal. Thanks to its simplicity, the entire design could be engraved into the hub, leaving only the date logotype to be punched in by hand. Among dime issues, the No Stars obverse was used only on the 1837 and 1838-O emissions. Accordingly, the No Stars obverse is always in demand as an important two-year type issue. Walter Breen notes 30 proof Seated Liberty dimes were struck on June 30, 1837, to serve as presentation pieces to demonstrate the new design to Treasury officials and other VIPs. The proofs show a diagnostic small tine of metal from the dentils above the first T in STATES and a diagonal die scratch through (STAT)ES and O(F). The No Stars design was a favorite of early numismatists, and the proofs apparently started appearing at auction at least as early as 1859. Our [June 6-9 Long Beach Signature Auction]( features a [delightful Premium Gem Proof, graded by NGC]( with sharply detailed design elements and reflective fields, under medium-intensity shades of jade-gold and cobalt-blue toning. The surfaces are impeccably preserved and eye appeal is outstanding. The 1837 No Stars Seated Liberty dime is extremely rare at the PR66 grade level, and the only one coin has been certified finer at either of the leading grading services. [Frank Frazetta Egyptian Queen Painting Original Art (1969)]( (estimate: $5,000,000+) is arguably the most famous piece by Frazetta, the legendary American fantasy and science fiction artist whose paintings and illustrations have been used in a multitude of media, including comic books, paperback book covers, posters and album covers. The image is so popular that it has inspired other artists to try to create their own versions as an homage to Frazetta. "In the late 1960s, Frank Frazetta completely reinvented and massively expanded the entire field of fantasy illustration, as his paintings single-handedly sold hundreds of thousands of books and scores of wildly popular posters," Heritage Auctions Vice President Todd Hignite said. "Dating from this peak period, his masterful Egyptian Queen is indisputably one of the greatest and most important paintings the artist ever created ... and it is by far the absolute best Frazetta painting to ever be offered at auction." [Superman #1 (DC, 1939) CGC VG/FN 5.0 Cream to off-white pages]( (estimate: $400,000+) is the finest unrestored copy Heritage Auctions ever has offered of the issue that ranks No. 3 on Overstreet's "Top 100 Golden Age Comics" list. The demand for this issue is such that it is more difficult to find in this grade (or better) than older prized DC issues like Action Comics #1 and Detective Comics #27. Not surprisingly, more restored copies of the 80-year-old issue have survived than unrestored copies like the one offered here. The story and art are from Superman co-creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The issue retells the origin of Superman, and features the first pin-up of the Man of Steel on the back cover. Ranked No. 5 on Overstreet's "Top 100 Golden Age Comics" list, and a candidate to elevate to at least a tie for the No. 4 spot, [Batman #1 (DC, 1940) CGC FN- 5.5 Cream to off-white pages]( (estimate: $300,000+) is a must-have issue for any serious collector. The Caped Crusader got his own title in this issue about a year after he first appeared in in Detective Comics #27, and the two titles ran concurrently for more than 70 years. The issue, which includes the first appearances of both the Joker and the Cat (who later was known as Catwoman), features a pin-up of Batman and Robin on the back cover, includes art by Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson. Egyptian Queen is one of 23 works by Frazetta in the auction. Also offered is [Frank Frazetta Jaguar God #2 Cover Painting Original Art (Verotik,1995)]( (estimate: $250,000+), one of two paintings the artist did in 1995. Incorporating many of the elements expected in a Frazetta image, the Jaguar God protects his damsel in distress against a horde of half-ape minions. This oil on canvas is a great example from the era by Frazetta, whose work has enjoyed a surge in popularity and demand in recent years. [Captain America Comics #1 (Timely, 1941) CGC FN/VF 7.0 Cream to off-white pages]( (estimate: $250,000+) leads the finest run of Captain America comics that Heritage Auctions ever has offered in a single sale. Copies of this issue, which includes the origin and first appearance of both Captain America and Bucky, are extremely scarce on the market, and when they do become available, demand soars. Red Skull makes his first appearance in the issue, which features Captain America knocking down Adolf Hitler on the cover by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon. [More information about Comic Auctions]( [Back to Top](#top) Hall of Fame Uniforms, Championship Rings and The Enos Slaughter Collection Anchor Heritage Sports Collectibles Auction [Roy Campanella jersey at auction Brooklyn Dodgers]( [Largest Super Bowl Ring ever made NFL]( Nearly 2,000 lots feature the finest game used gear, autographs and general sports ephemera in the marketplace packs the most important sports memorabilia auction of the season. Heritage Auctions' Spring Memorabilia Auction is open for bidding at HA.com/50013 and will close in extended bidding format, May 16-17. The auction event may draw more than $4 million in bids and the beloved backstop of the Brooklyn Bums is positioned to notch the top result in the sale: [Roy Campanella's 1956 home white flannel jersey]( likely to surpass its $100,000-up pre-auction estimate. [The largest Super Bowl ring ever designed]( - issued to members of the 2016 New England Patriots - bears a pre-auction estimate of $60,000-up. It is the first of its kind to see the hobby's auction block. [Hall of Fame outfielder Enos Slaughter]( best remembered for scoring the winning run in the 1946 World Series with his legendary "Mad Dash," supplies over 200 lots for consideration, each accompanied by a letter of provenance from his family. Best in the grouping are rings issued for his [1985 Hall of Fame induction]( and a replacement for his lost [1946 World Championship model](. Important game worn jerseys include specimens from the lockers of [Warren Spahn]( [Dick Butkus]( [Lance Alworth]( [Sonny Jurgensen]( and [Guy LaFleur](. Modern examples include the jersey worn by [Colin Kaepernick for his first NFL regular season appearance]( and the [very last ever worn by unanimous 2019 Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Mariano Rivera]( before his retirement. Championship rings include player models from the 1994 San Francisco 49ers, the 2013 Seattle Seahawks and every World Series ring of the New York Yankees issued between 1996 and 2009.
