[]Poster Auction This Weekend: Comic- and Animation-Related Highlights
You're running out of time to bid on our [March 23-24 Movie Posters Signature Auction](
Here are some highlights that caught our comic-and animation-loving eye:
[Batman and Robin (National Periodical Publications, 1966). Rolled, Very Fine- Uncut DC Comics Poster (40' X 54')]( [Batman and Robin (National Periodical Publications, 1966). Rolled, Very Fine-
Uncut DC Comics Poster (40" X 54")](
A rare offering, this single sheet normally comes cut into two separate posters, making this uncut piece a rare collectible for comic fans. In 1966, ABC-TV premiered a landmark series based upon the Dynamic Duo of DC Comics fame, Batman and Robin. The series was a huge success, setting off a merchandising craze almost like none other. These wonderful images, created by National Periodicals, were hung on the bedroom walls of many a child over fifty years ago. The poster looks great on display with its vibrant color, showing slight edge wear, light creases, minor tears, and pinholes. There are unobtrusive stains and smudges towards the borders, dust shadows at the edges, and a small chip in the top left corner that has been reattached with paper tape on the verso. Rolled, Very Fine-.
[Dumbo (RKO, 1941). Folded, Very Fine One Sheet (27' X 41') Style A]( [Dumbo (RKO, 1941). Folded, Very Fine
One Sheet (27" X 41") Style A](
Ben Sharpsteen directs this poignant tale of a lonely little elephant who learns to use his unique skills and fly with the aid of Timothy Mouse and a group of wise-cracking crows. The original release of this Disney classic grossed more revenue than Pinocchio and Fantasia combined. The film proved so popular that Time magazine planned to feature Dumbo on the December 1941 cover, that is, until the horrific bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7th. Signs of handling include light edge and fold wear, pinpoint crossfold separations, a couple of pinholes, and a few horizontal creases. Also visible is faint writing bleedthrough below the "M" in "Dumbo" and extra vertical folds. Folded, Very Fine.
[Adventures of Captain Marvel (Republic, 1941). Very Fine on Linen One Sheet (27' X 41') Chapter 1-'Curse of the Scorpion]( [Adventures of Captain Marvel (Republic, 1941). Very Fine on Linen
One Sheet (27" X 41") Chapter 1-"Curse of the Scorpion](
Taken from the popular Fawcett comic book character, this serial is considered by many to be one of the best ever produced by Republic, the King of the Serials studio. When a young boy is given the power to transform into a superhero with a single magic word, Captain Marvel is born. Western star Tom Tyler was never better than as the heroic Marvel. Bright colors abound in this rare poster, which only has a light bit of touchup at the upper crossfold. Still visible is slight edge wear, pinholes in the top corners, and a couple of small tears. There are minor stains and a faint dust shadow in the lower left border. Very Fine on Linen.
[Tintin and the Blue Oranges (Pathe Consortium Cinema, 1964). Very Fine on Linen French Moyenne (23' X 31.25') George 'Hergé' Remi Artwork]( [Tintin and the Blue Oranges (Pathe Consortium Cinema, 1964). Very Fine on Linen
French Moyenne (23" X 31.25") George "Hergé" Remi Artwork](
Concerned about world hunger, Professor Calculus finds himself in trouble after receiving a mysterious blue orange that can be grown in the desert. It's up to flipped-hair hero Tintin, his faithful companion Snowy, and the Captain to save the day in this live action French adaptation of the popular comic by Hergé (Georges Remi). This delightful country-of-origin poster from the film features terrific artwork by Hergé of several characters, including Tintin, Snowy, the Captain, and the Thompsons. Light restoration has addressed fold wear, pinholes, and small tears. Very Fine on Linen.
[Batman (20th Century Fox, 1966). Very Fine+ on Linen Full-Bleed French Grande (45.75' X 61') Boris Grinsson Artwork]( [Batman (20th Century Fox, 1966). Very Fine+ on Linen
Full-Bleed French Grande (45.75" X 61") Boris Grinsson Artwork](
The Caped Crusader leaps into the spotlight on this fabulous French grande from renowned artist Boris Grinsson. Adam West defined the Dark Knight for a generation of children across the globe, with a Biff-Bang-Pow aplomb that left his nemeses lurching back into the shadows every time. Not to say Lee Meriwether and Burgess Meredith didn't give him and Robin a run for their money now and then, as the beloved Cat Woman and Penguin. With very few issues to address, touchup has been applied to light edge and fold wear. Very Fine+ on Linen.
[Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (RKO, 1937). Fine+ on Paper Insert (14' X 36') Gustaf Tenggren Artwork]( [Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (RKO, 1937). Fine+ on Paper
Insert (14" X 36") Gustaf Tenggren Artwork](
Now much beloved, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was almost never made, initially thought of as "Disney's Folly." This animated feature length film - the first ever produced in the United States - was an enormous risk for the studio. Although both his brother Roy and his wife Lillian tried to talk Walt out of undertaking this expensive project, the legendary creator believed in it so much that he actually mortgaged his home to finance it. The film spent three years in production, racking up a budget of more than $1.5 million, and revolutionized animation in the process. The result was a fantastic success, quickly becoming the highest-grossing feature ever at the time (it was supplanted in 1939 by Gone With the Wind ). It remains today one of Disney's finest achievements, a perennial favorite for generations of fans. Showcasing classic artwork by Gustaf Tenggren, this insert has been professionally restored to correct fold wear, pinholes, and minor border tears. There was a tear from the left border through Happy's image into Sleepy's image that has been well addressed. Fine+ on Paper.
[Godzilla by Enzo Nistri (Paramount, 1957). Very Fine+ Signed Original Gouache Concept Artwork on Illustration Board (12.5' X 18')]( [Godzilla by Enzo Nistri (Paramount, 1957). Very Fine+
Signed Original Gouache Concept Artwork on Illustration Board (12.5" X 18")](
Enzo Nistri, one of the best Italian poster artists from the 1950s to the 1970s, takes on Japan's most famous daikaiju in this fantastic gouache painting. As an illustrator of exceptional talent, Nistri's artwork can be found on dozens of Italian posters, particularly Breakfast at Tiffany's and Hitchcock films like Vertigo, North by Northwest, Notorious, and Rope . A concept piece for the finalized Italian 4 fogli, Nistri transplants the king of all sci-fi monsters to more domestic settings, showing the skyline of Rome engulfed in flames while Godzilla rains destruction upon the city. Little did anyone know that IshirÅ Honda's gargantuan reptile would launch the longest-running film franchise in history, the original allegory of atomic warfare spawning a slew of monsters over the course of decades. A one of a kind piece making its Heritage debut, this signed painting has some roughness to the edges due to the artistic process, and there is a vellum cover attached with adhesive on the verso. Very Fine+.
[20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jean Mascii (Buena Vista, R-1963). Very Fine Signed Original Gouache Artwork on Illustration Board (25' X 19') used for the French Double Grande]( [20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jean Mascii (Buena Vista, R-1963). Very Fine
Signed Original Gouache Artwork on Illustration Board (25" X 19") used for the French Double Grande](
One of the finest French movie poster artists in the industry, Jean Mascii, provides a beautiful illustration for Walt Disney's film adaptation of Jules Verne's most famous novel. Disney's version features an outstanding performance from James Mason as Captain Nemo, supported by a fine cast including Kirk Douglas, Paul Lukas, and Peter Lorre. This lovely gouache painting, used as the finished poster illustration for the French grande (63" X 93"), has been signed by the artist. Making its first ever appearance at Heritage, this one of a kind piece has mild edge wear, minor corner bumps, and light surface scuffs. There are some faint stains towards the top, although these may be from the creation process, as well as adhesive registration marks attached to the painting by the creator. Very Fine. [Frank Lloyd Wright (American, 1867-1959) Presentation drawings of the Kalita Humphreys Theater, Dallas, Texas (two works), 1954]( Frank Lloyd Wright
Over the course of his 60-decade long career, [Frank Lloyd Wright]( earned a reputation for being obsessively meticulous in the pursuit of his complete artistic vision, designing everything from stained glass to furniture, and occasionally even clothing, to best suit his structures. In order to begin to render his visions in three dimensions, it was critical to first express those thoughts on paper. Despite having no formal training as an architect, his talent was undeniable. At just 20, he began working for Adler & Sullivan, Chicago's foremost design firm, and was shortly thereafter promoted over more senior draftsman to Chief of Design. His work was included in the Museum of Contemporary Art in New York's first architectural exhibition in 1932, organized by Philip Johnson, and was the subject of numerous focused exhibitions in the years following, culminating most recently in a retrospective of his works on paper in honor of his 150th anniversary.
Wright did not brainstorm on paper. He came to the page with a complete apperception of each new design; not just the postcard view, but also the emotional impact of the built space. In his drawings, he conveys this depth in a range of approaches, by choosing at times to present clients with polished, crisp watercolors and at others, a more expressive, soft, gestural take on the project. His drawings were the space where Wright could practice fantasy fulfillment: he could create any new reality, no mind paid to mundane complications of logistics, tradition, or personality. Due to this uncompromising position, there are a vast swathe of unbuilt projects in addition to a variety of projects depicting his ideas for a utopian American future.
The Kalita Humphreys Theater was commissioned in 1954 by the Dallas Theater Center and completed in 1959. It would become Dallas's first repertory theater, as well as the first and only theater design of Frank Lloyd Wright's to be constructed throughout his career. In his youth, Wright had wanted to be an actor. Although his life followed a different path, his love for the dramatic arts never ceased, and constructing a theater was the one undertaking he wanted to accomplish in his lifetime. Referring to the project, he stated, "This theater is the one thing I simply must build before they put me in a box." The Kalita Humphreys Theater typifies Wright's later work, conveying organic fluidity by eliminating right angles. Instead of designing the structure along a square grid, as may be expected, it was planned along a diamond grid, which results in an abstracted version of the long, stretched profiles for which he became famous. While his drawing practice would often include figures interacting with the space, these drawings exhibit a rare glimpse at his imagined mis-en-scène, demonstrating his regard for Japanese theatrical traditions. The costuming, blocking, and set design depicted expose an unexpected mastery of stagecraft in addition to his other known talents.
The concept of "unity" prevails throughout his entire body of work, particularly in the balance of built and natural environments. In his time, his drawings stood out for their unique framing and attention to vegetation and landscape, inspired by Japanese woodblock prints. Rather than situating forms along axes and lines of symmetry, Wright chose instead to experiment with layered geometric forms based on the teachings of Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. Balance, composition, and visual intrigue are prioritized over a strict adherence to convention. In his plans for residential structures, the home must be nestled in amongst the plot's unique topography and foliage. It was his belief that the organic and the inorganic were inextricable, so it was imperative to convey the holistic experience by framing his drawings with the same draping branches, meandering streams, and punctuating shrubbery as would be present after construction.
Later in his career this extended beyond a mere aesthetic focus as he designed his Usonian line of affordable housing that incorporated environmentally conscious elements such as radiant and passive solar heating systems for the colder months, and cantilevered roofs to keep the homes cool in the summer. The John Gillin house, completed in 1958, was Frank Lloyd Wright's final residential commission and his only residential project in Dallas. It is an example of a Usonian home due to its engineering and utilization of local building materials, although it is atypical compared to most of his other Usonian designs, most notably because of its size (this is the largest residence Wright designed) as well as its use of angles. The archetypal Usonian house is fairly small, meant to be accessible to the middle class, and situated around a garden space in an L-shape. Like the Kalita Humphreys Theater, Wright's only other Dallas commission, completed in 1959, the Gillin House was planned along a diamond grid and features countless triangles, layered and sprawling, resulting in a fractal-like synthesis of order and chaos.
[Frank Lloyd Wright (American, 1867-1959) Drawings of the John Gillin House, Dallas, Texas (five works), 1956]( These drawings come from the archive of W. Kelly Oliver, who apprenticed with famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright between 1949 and 1959. Upon completing his Taliesin Fellowship in 1955, Wright sent Oliver to Dallas, Texas as the architect's representative during the construction of the [Gillin Residence]( and later, the [Kalita Humphreys Theater]( which are among Wright's most significant works in the state. Throughout Oliver's career, he worked closely with Wright and became a trusted colleague, exchanging numerous personal correspondences. An extensive selection of Oliver's meticulously collected Wright and Taliesin-related materials and publications debut at auction here, including [three letters signed by Mr. Wright]( found in lot. Mr. Oliver was briefly in practice in Dallas with David George, a former Taliesin apprentice, as Kelly Oliver and David George Architects. Oliver was asked to return to Taliesin in 1962 to join with other past and current apprentices as the Taliesin Associated Architects. In that capacity, he assisted in the design of Kaden Tower in Louisville, Kentucky and was the on-site representative during its construction. In 1966 Mr. Oliver returned to his home state of Colorado and opened Oliver and Hellgren Architects in Denver. This was appointed the Denver office of the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and was subsequently responsible for the working drawings and, often the supervision, of over 50 projects for the Taliesin Associated Architects.
