This competitive Sunday was done in ink and blue pencil on Bristol board, with an image area measuring approximately 18.75" x 12.5". The title logo has the lettering on an acetate overlay, affixed to the Bristol board with tape. A Jim Davis-signed Paws Inc. Certificate of Authenticity is also included. In Excellent condition. [View]( [Ernie Chan and John Calnan World's Finest Comics #239 Cover Original Art (DC Comics, 1976)]( Ernie Chan and John Calnan World's Finest Comics #239 Cover Original Art (DC Comics, 1976) A fascinating combination of original art and reconstructive collage-work, here: Chan and Calnan had made the upper figures of Superman and Gold (the Metal Men robot) too tall to accommodate an overload of boilerplate text. In order to make room for a "Bicentennial" banner, a date-and-number strip, and the World's Finest logotype, the production department inserted a retouched photostat, reduced the height by 1.5", and jigsawed the reduced background onto the foreground figure of Batman. The fully original art remains beneath, intact but glue-stained. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with collage elements. Image area, 10" x 15". Paste-up seams and staining. Very Good condition. Note: Batman is original art, Superman and Gold are stats. [View]( [Virgil Ross - Witch Hazel Drawing Original Art (Warner Brothers, c. 1990s)]( Virgil Ross - Witch Hazel Drawing Original Art (Warner Brothers, c. 1990s) Witch Hazel never looked so devilishly charming as she does in these images taken from the 1956 Warner Brothers short Broom-Stick Bunny . Legendary Warner Brothers animator Virgil Ross (1907 - 1996) has captured the many moods of this June Forey-voiced character, including her transformation into a red-headed beauty at the end of the film. Virgil Ross was known for his action and dance sequences, as well as his ability to draw funny facial expressions. Several of the cartoons he worked on were nominated for Academy Awards, and Mr. Ross himself was given the prestigious Winsor McCay Award in 1988. He spent time at several other studios, most notably Hanna-Barbera and Filmation. Mr. Ross began releasing hand-painted Limited Edition cels of his famous Looney Tunes scenes as part of the "Master's Collection" cels sold at Warner Bros. Studio Stores and animation galleries. This signed artwork is on 16 field 5-peghole animation paper and the seven images, constructed with graphite and blue pencil underdrawing, measure 2.5" to 6". There is minor edgewear, otherwise condition is Fine. [View]( [The Mail Pilot Mickey Mouse Animation Drawings Group of 2 (Walt Disney, 1933)]( The Mail Pilot Mickey Mouse Animation Drawings Group of 2 (Walt Disney, 1933) In this Dave Hand-directed short, Black (Peg Leg) Pete is an air pirate bent on capturing Mickey's mail plane . He uses a harpoon in this scene that begins around the 6:00 mark. This pair of early production drawings of Pete and Mickey in their planes are rendered in graphite on 12 field 2-peghole animation paper and are numbered 92 and 10 respectively. These drawings, from the climactic conclusion of this Silly Symphony short, are finely detailed and date to the days when the world was fascinated with aviation. Both display handling and light edge wear; otherwise, condition is Very Good. [View]( [Donkey Kong (NES, Nintendo, 1986) Wata 6.5 CIB (Complete in Box). "The weekly auctions have grown steadily, to the point that they are a key reason why Heritage Auctions is the world's largest comics auctioneer," Heritage Auctions Vice President Lon Allen said. "Collectors have recognized the value of taking part in these auctions, as both buyers and sellers, which has drawn higher quality lots on a regular basis. It is not uncommon to have lots in our weekly auctions approach or even exceed $10,000, and when you have improving quality multiplied by the number of lots in this week's auctions, we are optimistic that this could be an exceptional auction." If that happens, it will continue a run of unprecedented success for the comics department's weekly auctions. Last week's even totaled $455,509, which was the second-highest total ever recorded in the company's history for a weekly auction. It also marked the fourth time in the last calendar year that a comics weekly auction brought more than $400,000. Among the lots expected to be among those in highest demand in the auction: - [Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel, 1962) CGC VG 4.0 Off-white to white pages]( - [The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC Apparent FN/VF 7.0 Off-white to white pages]( - [Humberto Ramos Infinity #1 Cover Variant Original Art (Marvel, 2013)]( - [The Incredible Hulk #181 (Marvel, 1974) CGC NM- 9.2 White pages]( - [The Incredible Hulk #1 (Marvel, 1962) CGC GD- 1.8 Cream to off-white pages]( - [Journey Into Mystery #83 (Marvel, 1962) CGC VG+ 4.5 White pages]( - [Tales of Suspense #39 (Marvel, 1963) CGC GD/VG 3.0 Off-white pages]( - [Planet Comics #1 (Fiction House, 1940) CGC FN- 5.5 Off-white pages]( - [The Avengers #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC FN- 5.5 Off-white pages]( To see images and learn more about the 1,326 lots in Heritage Auctions [Sunday Internet Comics, Animation & Art auction]( visit [ha.com/121909](. [Back to Top](#top) []Frank Frazetta Iconic Buck Rogers Cover Leads Heritage Auctions' Comics & Comic Art Auction Past $9.4 Million [Frank Frazetta Famous Funnies #209 Cover Original Art]( Original comic cover art by legendary artist Frank Frazetta soared beyond its pre-auction estimate, claiming top-lot honors and leading Heritage Auctions' [Comics & Comic Art auction]( to $9,432,650 Feb. 21-23 in Dallas. The auction boasted sell-through rates of 99.5 percent by value and 99.6 percent by lots sold through the world's largest comics auctioneer. [Frank Frazetta Famous Funnies #209 Cover Original Art (Eastern Color, 1953)]( drew bids from two dozen hopeful collectors before it closed at $552,000, surpassing its pre-auction estimate of $300,000 by 84 percent. One of just eight Famous Funnies covers the famed artist ever did, it features Buck Rogers and his trusty Sonic Ray Gun, and Wilma Deering, Rogers' equally smart and assertive adventurer, facing certain peril by space goons blocking the only exit from a cave. The image is considered one of the most jaw-droppingly beautiful and graceful full-figure images of a woman ever to grace a comic book cover. The image justified and cemented Frazetta's legendary status as one of the greatest artists of the female form of all time. "The results of this auction are a reflection of not just the exceptional quality of lots we offer, but also the clients' base of knowledge," Heritage Auctions Vice President Todd Hignite said. "That the exceptional lots inspired so many to bid aggressively came as no surprise, and that surge of bidding goes a long way toward explaining these results." Similarly competitive bidding also drove [Superman #1 (DC, 1939) CGC VG+ 4.5 Cream to off-white pages]( beyond its estimate before it sold for $336,000. An exceptionally popular issue, it is the first in one of the most popular titles in comic history; this copy is a rarity in exceptionally high demand because it is one of few known copies that has not undergone any restoration. This issue marked the first time a character created for comic books was given his own title. Unique in the fact that it was both penciled AND inked by Steve Ditko, [Strange Tales #117 Splash Page 1 Doctor Strange Original Art (Marvel, 1964)]( more than doubled its $100,000 pre-auction estimate when it finished at $228,000. Like several of the other top lots, it was heavily pursued, with 33 collectors submitting bids. The issue features Doctor Strange and his own Astral Projection, adding to the demand among collectors. More than 30 collectors made a play for [Dave Gibbons Watchmen #1 Cover Original Art (DC, 1986)]( before it finally brought $228,000. The cover of the first Watchmen issue remains one of the most recognizable images in the series, in part because the drip of blood on the smiley face button is reminiscent of the hands of a clock striking 12; "time running out" was a recurring theme throughout the series. An extraordinary copy of the second-most valuable Silver Age issue, [The Incredible Hulk #1 (Marvel, 1962) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages]( sparked more than 20 bids before it realized $216,000. An absolute rarity in this grade, this issue features the origin and first appearance of the Hulk and supporting characters Rick Jones, Betty Ross and Thunderbolt Ross, with art and cover by Jack Kirby. Other top lots included, but were not limited to: - [Journey Into Mystery #83 (Marvel, 1962) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages]( $144,000 - [Robert Crumb Help! #24 "Fred the Teen-Age Girl Pigeon" Complete 2-Page Story Original Art (Warren Publishing, 1965)]( $120,000 - [Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel, 1962) CGC VF- 7.5 Off-white pages]( $120,000 - [John Romita Sr. Amazing Spider-Man Annual #7 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1970)]( $87,000 - [Steve Ditko Strange Tales #117 Story Page 3 Doctor Strange Original Art (Marvel, 1964)]( $78,000 - [Pokémon First Edition Base Set Sealed Booster Box (Wizards of the Coast, 1999)]( $78,000 [Back to Top](#top) []Help Wanted: Comics Grader Do you have knowledge of Silver and Golden Age comic books? The auction also will feature pieces from the collection of noted Dallas collector and designer Joseph Minton and a collection of lots from important Western artists. "The clocks are incredible, with mechanisms by important clock makers within finely crafted cases," Heritage Auctions Fine Art Silver & Decorative Art Director Karen Rigdon said. "The mechanisms are signed by important makers and the cases are beautiful, dating to the 18th and 19th centuries." The top estimate in the auction belongs to an exceptional [Melchior Balthazar French Régence Gilt Bronze-Mounted and Brass-Inlaid Kingwood Tall Case Clock with "Equation of Time," Paris, circa 1730](. Standing 82-1/4 inches high, the clock (estimate $20,000-30,000) has a commanding presence with its gracefully elegant late Baroque lines. A [Simon Lachez Walnut Veneered, Noble Wood and Mother-of-Pearl Marquetry-Inlaid Oak Tall Case Clock, Utrecht, Holland, circa 1720]( (estimate $15,000-25,000) stands 96 inches tall. This wonderful example in a Dutch Baroque inlayed case features a shaped bonnet with arched pediment supported by barley twist columns. A [Frères Dumont Louis-XIV Lacquer, Brass, and Gilt Bronze-Mounted Religieuse Table Clock, Besançon, France, circa 1700]( (estimate $7,000-10,000) is ornamented with faux tortoiseshell and brass boulle marquetry inlay and gilt bronze mounts. A shaped bonnet has eight torch finials and acanthus leaves to front corners, and arched pediment above a cuboid case with gilt bronze dial with enameled Roman numerals and engraved Arabic numerals supported by two female figures. Also included is a selection of historic and contemporary Western Art that ranges in value, providing an opportunity for both emerging and seasoned collectors to attain works by renowned artists of the American West. Featured among the art of the American West is a collection from a trustee at the Autry Museum of the American West in Los Angeles. Among the top Western Art lots is George Hallmark's monumental work, [Otro Dia, 2005]( (estimate: $12,000-18,000), which is among one of the finest highlights in the auction. A native Texan, Hallmark's paintings are held in museums and serious collections nationwide. With the open door that peeks through the cool interior to the garden and the iconic burro that gazes outward, this large-scale work acts as an invitation for the viewer to explore the charming Southwest architecture that so deeply fascinated Hallmark. The sale also will showcase an array of bronzes by premier Western artists. [Tim Shinabarger's Headed for High Country, 2007]( (estimate: $12,000-18,000), is an exquisite example of his ability to capture the ruggedness of the outdoors. Typically working with wildlife figures, this 59-inch-long bronze is unique in that it depicts riders with their packhorses - a subject rarely seen on the market. Among a strong collection of paintings in the sale by George Phippen, [Wild Bunch, 1950]( (estimate: $10,000-15,000) captures the energetic and vibrant atmosphere of life on the range. This dynamic work depicts an action-packed scene of two cowboys wrangling the herd, as dust envelops the riders. [Visions of Change]( (estimate: $10,000-$15,000) by Mian Situ, is a psychologically steeped portrait of a grandmother, mother and son looking out toward the viewer with the hopes of prosperity and change for each subsequent generation. This work exemplifies Situ's dedication to showcasing the contributions of the Chinese in the expansion of the West. Online bidding, which is presented in conjunction with the Norman Seeff Archive and Artsy, begins Feb. 26 on HA.com, and the images will be available for viewing at [Heritage Auctions' Beverly Hills gallery]( (9478 West Olympic, First Floor, Beverly Hills, Calif., 90212) from Feb. 29 through March 8. Among the iconic personalities featured in the auction: [artist Andy Warhol]( actors [John Belushi]( [Dennis Hopper]( [Jodie Foster]( and [Steve Martin]( musicians [James Taylor]( [Ray Charles]( [Whitney Houston]( and the [Rolling Stones]( and athletes like [former boxer Ken Norton]( and [former New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath](. "Heritage Auctions is very excited to have our first single-owner online photographs auction in cooperation with the Norman Seeff Archive and Artsy," Heritage Auctions Photographs Director Nigel Russell said. "The online format gives us the flexibility to host this collection of amazing portraits of 20th century music and entertainment icons." For 50 years, Seeff has been the man behind some of the recognizable images of the 20th century. The lots offered are comprised of these music and pop culture icons encompassing some of Seeff's most memorable sessions, including works featured on album covers and their outtakes, such as Stage Fright by [The Band]( [Frank Zappa]( Strictly Commercial, [Carly Simon]( "Playing Possum" and [The Rolling Stones]( Exile on Main Street. "I never fixate on a shot," Seeff said. "It's always about a spontaneous unfolding experience. I discovered early on that if I aimed for a particular outcome or goal, the emotional authenticity was lost. Every shot is a one-time moment and then the next one happens spontaneously, so I end up with hundreds of shots that document a chronological sequence of events to when I am able to say 'we've got it, we're done.'" The vintage gelatin silver prints, most of which are black-and-white prints, have estimates ranging from $2,000-5,000. Each work is unique and comes directly from Seeff's archive. Seeff moved from his native South Africa to New York City in 1968. His photos of people on the streets of Manhattan were discovered by art director and graphic designer Bob Cato, who became a mentor to Seeff and gave him his first major assignment: to produce images for The Band's 1969 Stage Fright album. The results were so successful that he earned immediate recognition and launched his career as a "rock photographer." He relocated in 1971 to Los Angeles, where he became creative director at United Artists Records and soon opened an independent studio on the Sunset Strip, where he created many of his most remarkable images. It wasn't until the late 1990s, when an assistant went to retrieve film assets from Seeff's studio in Studio City, that his archive of gelatin silver prints - overlooked for years due to Seeff's abounding roster of projects - were rediscovered.
