Gold Ingot, Marysville. 174.04 Ounces]( California Gold Rush-era relics from the shipwreck of the S.S. Central America were among the top sellers in Heritage's January 29-February 3 Long Beach Signature Auction, held in conjunction with the Long Beach Coin & Collectibles Expo. Altogether, prices topped $11 million, with after auction sales continuing through February 6. All prices realized include a 20% Buyer's Premium. Of the six top lots, five were gold ingots found in the shipwreck of the S.S. Central America, highlighted by the [Very Large Size 174.04 Oz. Harris, Marchand & Co. Gold Ingot](. This is the sole ingot from the firm's Marysville office recovered in the shipwreck, and it is distinctive enough to warrant a significant writeup in Bowers' A California Gold Rush History. It sold for $528,000. Additional ingots in this auction included: - [Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot. 97.19 Ounces]( Sold for: $204,000 - [Blake & Co. Gold Ingot. 19.30 Ounces]( Sold for: $156,000 - [Blake & Co. Small-Sized Gold Ingot. 14.31 Ounces]( Sold for: $144,000 - [Justh & Hunter Gold Ingot. 50.50 Ounces]( Sold for: $121,333 A pair of Panama-Pacific fifty dollar gold commemoratives, each graded MS64, further represented the state of California in the highlights, both because they were minted in San Francisco, and because they commemorated the Panama-Pacific International Exposition, held just a few miles from the place the coins were manufactured. The [rarer Round piece]( brought a sale price of $114,000, while the [iconic Octagonal coin]( sold for $81,000. The top coin sold in this auction was the ever-popular [1879 Flowing Hair Stella, this one graded Proof-64 Deep Cameo by PCGS](. This piece, while technically a pattern, has been enthusiastically collected as a regular issue since its manufacture, most likely due to its odd denomination. It exchanged hands for $210,000. Additional highlights included: - [1795 $5 Small Eagle MS61 PCGS. CAC. BD-3]( Sold for: $84,000 - [1799 $10 Large Obverse Stars, BD-10, MS63 NGC. CAC]( Sold for: $75,001 - [1901 $10 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. CAC]( Sold for: $75,000 - [1792 Washington Getz Pattern Cent, Small Eagle, Copper MS61 Brown PCGS Gold Shield]( Sold for: $72,000 - [1864 G$1 MS69 NGC]( Sold for: $72,000 - [1839 50C No Drapery PR62 NGC]( Sold for: $54,000 - [1881 $20 AU55 PCGS Gold Shield]( Sold for: $54,000 - [1937-D 5C Three-Legged, FS-901, MS66 PCGS Gold Shield]( Sold for: $48,000 The next Signature auction of US coins will open for bidding soon at [coins.HA.com](. [Back to Top](#top) []Seldom Seen Selections: MS66 1910-S Twenty [1910-S $20 MS66 PCGS Gold Shield]( [1910-S $20 MS66 PCGS Gold Shield]( More than five years have passed since we last offered a [1910-S double eagle in the seldom-granted Premium Gem grade]( but we are privileged to be able to do so as a part of our [March 13-16 Dallas Signature Auction](. PCGS and NGC have certified a combined 19 examples at MS66, plus only three numerically finer coins. Roger Burdette estimates a total of 9,500 pieces survive from a mintage of more than 2.1 million 1910-S double eagles. About 70-75% of those were repatriated from foreign holdings. Such coins would be an unlikely source for an example of this quality, given the rigors of transit and storage. This brilliant, medium-gold example is sharply struck, with smoothly frosted surfaces and just a handful of tiny, nondistracting marks. The Large S mintmark has a broad diagonal, and the eagle sports a "Long Eye" from die polishing. Cartwheel mint luster illuminates all aspects of the famous Saint-Gaudens design. The quality of this coin makes one wonder if it was purchased directly from the San Francisco Mint and so-preserved throughout its tenure in collector hands. [Back to Top](#top) []Dustin Johnston Promoted to Vice President of Currency at Heritage Auctions [Dustin Johnston][Heritage Auctions]( has announced that Dustin Johnston has been promoted to Vice President. Now in his 20th year at Heritage Auctions, Johnston has been active in just about every aspect of the business. Most recently, as Director of the [Heritage Auctions Currency department]( Johnston oversaw all aspects of the department, including consignment acquisitions, purchasing, catalogs and inventory management. "Dustin is an accomplished expert who is universally admired and respected throughout the Currency collecting community," Heritage Auctions Co-Chairman Jim Halperin said. "His knowledge and expertise are the results of exceptional talent and energy combined with his long-term, sharply focused involvement in all aspects of collecting, including roles in prominent currency collecting professional organizations." Prior to his arrival at Heritage Auctions in 1998, Johnston was a very active numismatist. He picked up collecting at the age of 10, and by high school, he was attending national conventions and actively buying and selling coins and currency. He also promoted the hobby, won literary and exhibiting awards from the American Numismatic Association (ANA), and served as an Exhibit Judge and Numismatic Theater Speaker at the ANA's National Money Shows. A decorated currency collecting expert, Johnston is a member of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG), the ANA, the International Bank Note Society (IBNS), the Society of Paper Money Collectors (SPMC) and is Vice President for the Professional Currency Dealers Association (PCDA). "Heritage has enjoyed a streak of several exceptionally successful comics auctions in recent years, and we anticipate that collectors will find similarly irresistible materials in this auction, as well," Heritage Auctions Vice President Lon Allen said. "This sale features extraordinary lots at the top of the auction - the Frank Frazetta Famous Funnies cover is the first we have offered in 15 years - and includes highly intriguing options for collectors at all levels." [Frank Frazetta Famous Funnies #209 Cover Original Art (Eastern Color, 1953)]( is one of just eight covers for the title by the hugely popular artist. With a pre-auction estimate of $300,000+, this is one of the most coveted Frazetta covers for any comic. The image is a prime example of why the artist is revered for his ability to draw women, and of the 1950s-esque "retro" style that is so popular among many collectors. An image like this is extraordinarily rare - the last time Heritage offered a Frazetta Famous Funnies cover was 15 years ago - which understandably fuels the demand among collectors. [Superman #1 (DC, 1939) CGC VG+ 4.5 Cream to off-white pages]( (estimate: $300,000+) is an exceptionally popular issue, the first in one of the most popular titles in comic history. Considering the issue is nearly 80 years old, nearly all known copies are restored, but the allure to collectors for this copy is due in part to the fact that this one is not. Superman #1 hit the newsstands after his debut in Action Comics #1, boosting the Man of Steel's popularity to new levels. This issue marked the first time a character created for comic books was given his own title. Roughly a million copies were printed in 1939, but very few are known to have survived at this grade or higher, making it a must-have issue among serious collectors. The issue is ranked No. 3 on Overstreet's "Top 100 Golden Age Comics" list. [The Incredible Hulk #1 (Marvel, 1962) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages]( (estimate: $200,000+) is an exceptional copy of the second-most valuable Silver Age issue. Copies with such a high grade are nearly impossible to find, and this issue with the origin and first appearance of the Hulk is inarguably a highlight in the auction. The issue also features the first appearances of supporting characters Rick Jones, Betty Ross and Thunderbolt Ross, and features art and cover by Jack Kirby. One of the most dramatic images in the auction is [Dave Gibbons Watchmen #1 Cover Original Art (DC, 1986)]( (estimate: $200,000+). Among the most influential and iconic comic series of the 1980s, Watchmen by Gibbons and Alan Moore had a lasting impact on the industry. The cover of the first issue remains one of the most recognizable images in the series, with the drip of blood on the smiley face button reminiscent of the hands of a clock striking 12 as "time running out" was a recurring theme throughout the series. Another bold, dramatic image is found on the cover of [Journey Into Mystery #83 (Marvel, 1962) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages]( (estimate: $200,000+), featuring the origin and first appearance of Thor, who is billed on the cover as "The Most Exciting Super-Hero of All Time!!" This copy carries one of the highest grades known to exist, and is the highest-graded issue offered by Heritage in three years. No. 6 on Overstreet's "Top 50 Silver Age Comics" list, this issue is considered one of the four most legendary "origin" issues of the early Marvel Age. The cover is by Jack Kirby, who collaborated with Steve Ditko on the issue's art.
