Heritage Auctions' Coin Newsletter [Read this newsletter online]( [Heritage Auctions]( [Coin News]( In This Issue: • [Rare Gold Featured in Long Beach Auction](#collector-a) • [Seldom Seen Selections: Getz Pattern Cent, the Bushnell Specimen](#collector-b) • [Website Tips: Items Just Like This One](#collector-c) • [Help Wanted: Heritage's Coin Sales Department is expanding](#collector-e) • [Around Heritage Auctions](#around-1) • [This Week's Top Ten](#top10) • [Take Our 24th Annual Auction Survey](#survey-1) • [Is It Time To Sell?](#sell) • [Current Auctions](#current) January 29, 2019 [Rare Gold Featured in Long Beach Auction] [1795 $5 Small Eagle MS61 PCGS. CAC. BD-3, High R.3]( Gold rarities ranging from early gold to stellas to California Gold Rush era ingots are open for bidding now at Heritage's [January 31-February 3 Long Beach Signature Auction]( in connection with the Long Beach Coin and Collectibles Expo. The finest coins in the auction will be offered in the Premier Session, taking place Thursday evening, January 31, at 6PM PT. The 1795 half eagle is an important issue representing not only the first year of the type, but the first year of the denomination. As such, it enjoys great popularity among type coin collectors, especially in mint state grades. This auction features an [example graded MS61 by PCGS]( and certified with the CAC green sticker that indicates that it is strong for the assigned grade. A second mint state 18th century gold coin is a [1799 eagle with large obverse stars, assigned a grade of MS63 by NGC]( another example of a high grade coin in heavy demand for type sets. Four dollar gold pieces, or stellas, are always in high demand, and any time such a coin appears in an auction it has to be considered a highlight. Such is the case with the [PCGS-graded Proof-64 Deep Cameo example of the 1879 Flowing Hair issue]( easily the most common of the four stella issues, but with an exceptionally low mintage believed to be short of 500 coins. This coin represents an early attempt by the mint to create gold trade coinage, but all efforts in that regard ceased after two years. Another ultra-low mintage coin is the 1881 double eagle, one of a number of 1880's era Philadelphia twenties that are highly prized in any grade. This coin, mintage 2,199, is represented in this auction by [an example graded AU55 by PCGS](. A mere ten coins have been certified in mint state grades by the major grading services combined, making AU pieces like this one prizes for those collectors seeking to assemble a date set of twenties. A number of our recent auctions have featured examples of California gold ingots recovered from the S.S. Central America, and this one follows suit with five such bars offered to collectors. Easily the most fascinating is the [Very Large Size ingot (174.04 ounces) from Harris, Marchand & Co](. Along with the sheer size of the piece, this is the sole Harris, Marchand ingot from the Marysville branch office; all others were from the main Sacramento office. Additional highlights of this auction include: - [1792 Washington Getz Pattern Cent, Small Eagle, Copper MS61 Brown PCGS Gold Shield]( - [1839 50C No Drapery PR62 NGC]( - [1864 G$1 MS69 NGC]( - [1901 $10 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. CAC]( - [1915-S Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Round MS64 PCGS]( - [1915-S Panama-Pacific 50 Dollar Octagonal MS64 NGC]( - [Blake & Co. Small-Sized Gold Ingot. 14.31 Ounces]( - [Blake & Co. Gold Ingot. 19.30 Ounces]( - [Justh & Hunter Gold Ingot. 50.50 Ounces]( - [Kellogg & Humbert Gold Ingot. 97.19 Ounces]( This auction closes for bidding soon at [coins.HA.com](. Baker-25, W-10775, Musante GW-22, High R.5]( [1792 CENT Washington Getz Pattern Cent, Small Eagle, Copper MS61 Brown PCGS Gold Shield. Baker-25, W-10775, Musante GW-22, High R.5]( The 1792 Washington President 1 copper and silver coins are attributed to the hand of Lancaster, Pennsylvania engraver Peter Getz. Working with a large number of contributors, the late George Fuld published The Washington Pattern Coinage of Peter Getz, a history and census of this issue in 2009. Pennsylvanian Robert Morris, who was born in Liverpool, England in 1734, served as the United States Superintendent of Finance from 1781 to 1784, and later as a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania from 1789 to 1795. Fuld relates that it was in that capacity that Morris served on a committee to consider establishment of a Mint. He introduced a bill on December 21, 1791 that provided: "That, upon said coins, respectfully, there shall be the following devices and legends, namely: Upon one side of each of the said coins there shall be an impression or representation of the head of the President of the United States for the time being, with an inscription of which shall express the initial or first letter of his Christian or first name, and his surname at length, the succession of the Presidency numerically, and the year of the coinage, and upon the reverse of each of the gold and silver coins there shall be the figure or representation of an eagle, with the inscription, 'United States of America' and upon the reverse of each of the copper coins, there shall be an inscription which shall express the denomination of the piece, namely cent, or half cent, as the case may require." The Getz pieces were produced in silver and copper, with the latter offered as a part of [our current Long Beach Signature Auction](. Both compositions follow the Morris recommendation for gold and silver coins. The obverse features President Washington in profile facing left, with the inscription G. WASHINGTON. PRESIDENT. 1., and the date, 1792, below. The reverse has an eagle with a shield covering its breast, its wings raised with 15 stars between the wings. The eagle clutches an olive branch and six arrows. Around, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The Getz patterns exist in silver with a plain edge, circles and squares edge, or twinned olive leaves edge. The majority of silver pieces show undertype from various other coins. Copper examples are known with a plain edge or circle and squares edge. The plain edge pieces, such as this one, are the most frequently encountered, although only about 35 pieces are known. [This piece, graded MS61 by PCGS]( has pleasing tan and chocolate-brown surfaces with minor rim bruises that confirm a storied provenance dating back to 1882. On every Permanent Auction Archives page, you will see a table showing every coin of the same date and grade currently offered for auction. [Items Just Like This One] Immediately below the coin's description and above the listing for other prices for the same coin in previous auctions, there is a table showing each available piece, with lot number, grade, service, and current bid. To take a look at the coin and perhaps bid, simply click on the link to the piece on the left side of the table. If you are interested in the coin, but in a different grade, there is a link at the bottom of the table to all coins of the same date, regardless of grade. [Back to Top](#top) []Around Heritage Auctions March 30th Auction Shaping Up Nicely By [Don Ackerman](mailto:DonA@HA.com) The consignment deadline for our March 30-31 Americana & Political Auction #6185 is just a few days away, falling on January 30th. We've been accumulating items for this sale from a variety of sources. A goodly amount is "on-hand", awaiting processing, photographing, and cataloging. Other items are "in the pipeline", awaiting shipment to Dallas. Every day is like Christmas with packages arriving daily containing promised consignments for the different historical venues. If I don't get a package one day, it's a "bummer!" Even though the deadline is January 30th, I don't want to get "behind the eight ball", so have started the laborious task of cataloging the material that has been entered and stickered. I chip away at it, sometimes 20 lots a day, sometimes as much as 50...it all depends. I make a little headway, but more material comes in to "complicate my life". It all has to be written up properly and on schedule. "Build an auction house and they will come!" (Thanks, Kevin Costner!) [[Bonnie Parker & Clyde Barrow: Significant and Extensive Photo Archive Consigned by Clyde Barrow's Nephew] Bonnie Parker & Clyde Barrow: Significant and Extensive Photo Archive Consigned by Clyde Barrow's Nephew]( [[Bonnie Parker & Clyde Barrow: Poetry Ostensibly Written by the Folk Hero Outlaws] Bonnie Parker & Clyde Barrow: Poetry Ostensibly Written by the Folk Hero Outlaws]( Being a resident of Dallas, my favorite lots are related to two of our most infamous denizens, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, more commonly known as "Bonnie & Clyde." The material was consigned by Clyde's nephew. [One lot consists of extensive family photo albums with approximately fifty pictures of Bonnie or Clyde, or both](. The other lot has [a memorandum or date book that contains poems that we believe were personally composed and written by Bonnie & Clyde](. The poems are referenced in a 1934 book written by Bonnie's mother and Clyde's older sister Nell, the mother of our consignor. That book, with related ephemera, accompanies the lot. [Robert E. Lee: Vannerson Photograph on Lee Gallery Trade Card]( [William Demuth counter-top zinc trade figure of Punch]( The sale includes perhaps [the most extensive collection of Robert E. Lee photographs ever assembled]( many of which were personally autographed by "Marse Robert". The consignor thoroughly researched the subject. His expertise is evident in the research material he provided us with that serves as a basis for our write-ups. This collection encompasses 109 lots and will be sold in its entirety on March 30th. We will have a very good selection of advertising items, featuring a [William Demuth counter-top zinc trade figure of Punch]( on the original base. The estimate on this wonderful piece of Americana is $60,000-$80,000. There will also be two cigar store Indians by Demuth, some tin advertising signs, a Poll Parrot neon sign retrieved from a defunct Dallas-area shoe store many years ago and two illuminated "globes" for Gulf Gasoline and Texaco. [Early Technology: Very Rare and Important 1877 Trade Card for the Bell Telephone Company]( In the area of technology, we have [an extremely early 1877 trade card for the Bell Telephone Company]( issued just one year after Alexander Graham Bell patented his invention and in the same year the Bell Telephone Company began operations. It whimsically shows Uncle Sam and John Bull having a transatlantic phone conversation, a technical feat that did not occur until 1915. We also have a reel-to-reel tape recording (transferred from the original vinyl discs) of a 1951 informal Albert Einstein interview that took place in Princeton. The 3-way conversation lasts 32 minutes. In it, Einstein talks about the Ethel & Julius Rosenberg Trial, the acquisition of the atomic bomb by the Soviets, his assessment of FDR and Truman, his "second thoughts" on his famous letter to FDR that led to the development of the A-bomb and his taste in music. This covers just a few of the stand-out lots but, as said, there's more in the pipeline. Keep those cards, letters and, more importantly, packages, coming!
