We had humorously noted that we are strictly on a last-name basis with Mr. Wilson of Dennis the Menace fame, but the gentleman who wrote to us noted that the character does indeed have a full name, George Everett Wilson Sr. As for Mrs. Wilson, her first name is one that people who have seen Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice know all too well: Martha. [Back to Top](#top) []Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide -Regular-Issue Hardcovers (Third Article in a Series) By David Stone, Heritage Auctions Bob Overstreet began publishing regular-issue hardcovers with his second edition in 1972 (see the separate article on hardbound OPG #2 in our next segment). The hardbound editions have always been much scarcer and more valuable than their softbound counterparts, especially the early issues. Collector demand for the hardbounds was hard to judge in the early years, resulting in a recurring cycle of over- and under-ordering on the print runs throughout the first decade. Number 3 had a small print run of 75 copies and it was difficult to fill all the orders, so Overstreet increased the print run dramatically (to 1,000 copies) for hardbound number 4. This proved too optimistic, and many copies went unsold, so he cut back on the print run for number 5. The print runs continued to oscillate through the first 10 issues, as Overstreet fine-tuned his operation to calculate the optimum number of copies to produce. Accordingly, editions 3 and 5 are rare, while numbers 4 and 6 are relatively common in today's market. The same holds true, to a lesser extent, for editions 7 and 9 (scarce) and numbers 8 and 10 (common), but the advent of eBay and Amazon has made all these books more available in recent years. At first (editions 2 and 3), the hardcover editions had simple blue cloth covers with gilt lettering on the front and spine (see below). The hardbound OPG #2 had two print runs that featured slightly different cover designs, with varied arrangements of the gilt text. [The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide] Pictorial front covers began with OPG #4 and the books usually featured paid advertising on the back cover (for some reason, the back cover of hardbound #5 was blank). Regular editions featured only one cover design for both hard and softcover OPGs for editions 2 through 26. Beginning with the 27th edition, two cover variants were produced each year, both available in hard or softcover format (see the two cover variants for OPG #27, featuring the Flash and Green Lantern, below). [The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide] [The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide] This practice continues through the present day, with the exception of the 45th edition, which offered four cover variants featuring Captain America, Superman, Captain Action, and X-O Manowar, all available in both formats. This was done to celebrate the 45th edition of the OPG and made possible by the cooperation of four different comic book publishers. For some reason, the Captain Action and X-O Manowar cover versions are seen with less frequency in public offerings. With the 46th edition, Overstreet produced a joint cover concept for its regular-issue Guides, where the two independent cover designs, both produced by artist Amanda Conner, could be combined side-to-side to produce a larger picture (see below). [The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide] [The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide] There have been a few extra OPG give-away gimmicks included with the Guide over the years. For instance, the two-sided ONE/OWL grading card was issued with the 22nd edition (both hard and soft cover), but the cards were easily lost and few copies on the secondary market include one today (see image below). [The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide] Quality control has always been pretty good for the hardbound editions, but a few errors have slipped by over the years. At least one copy of hardbound number 16 is known with the contents bound in upside down with respect to the covers. As of 2018, including the first and second printing versions of hardbound OPG #2, there are 72 different cover variants in the regular-issue hardbound series. As banks failed and desperate men waited for hours in bread lines, the Goudey Gum Company broke new ground with a 240-card issue featuring such pre-war legends as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Mel Ott. Heritage Auctions will scatter those 240 parts to the collecting winds with the presentation of the [Number One Current Finest assembly in the PSA Set Registry, the fourth finest of all time](. Bidding is now open for the Jan. 24 auction. "Everybody loves the 1933 Goudey issue," said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage. "It's a real thrill to bring the best set in the hobby to our bidding audience." Calculated to a combined rating of a remarkable 8.68, the set is broken down into its individual components in this single-consignor event, surrendering the PSA throne in the process, most likely to an active bidder in this sale.
