[]Dallas auctions raise over $9 million
[1792 CENT Washington Silver Pattern, Lettered Edge, Baker-20, Breen-1231, Musante GW-31 (B), High R.7 - Obverse Graffiti - NGC Details. XF]( Three numismatic auctions held last week at Heritage Auctions' Dallas world headquarters raised a total of more than $9 million. Parts X and XI of The Eric P. Newman Collection realized a combined $2.3 million on November 7 and 10, while a separate auction of US coins brought over $6.7 million. All prices include a 20% Buyer's Premium.
[Part X of The Eric Newman Collection]( featured US Currency. The top lot in this auction was a [Fr. 5 $5 1861 St. Louis Demand Note, graded Extremely Fine 40 Apparent by PCGS]( that had been in Mr. Newman's collection for over 75 years. A mere ten examples of this note are listed in the census, and this one, clearly among the top three, sold for $81,000.
[Part XI of The Eric P. Newman Collection]( was devoted to US Coins and other numismatically-related items such as books, correspondence, and counterfeit detectors. The top lot in this auction was a [silver 1792 Washington Pattern graded XF Details by NGC](. Just five examples of this issue are known, with only three available to collectors. This coin sold for $204,000. Another 1792 Washington pattern, the [Getz half dollar]( sold for $144,000. This example, graded XF45 by NGC, is one of nine such pieces known with a plain edge and no trace of an undertype.
As in the previous auctions, items sold are from the extensive collection of Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society (a Missouri not-for-profit corporation), which have been assembled over a period of 90 years. Proceeds of the sale of all items will be used exclusively for supplementing the Society's scholarly numismatic research efforts and for the benefit of other not-for-profit institutions selected by Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society for public purposes.
California gold ingots were the highlight of the [Dallas Signature auction]( with the three bars offered each breaking the six-figure barrier. The largest ingot, a [Henry Hentsch ingot weighing 154.23 ounces]( raised $336,000, while two Kellogg & Humbert ingots realized $156,000 and $138,000. The top coin in this auction was an [1895 dollar, graded PR66 by PCGS](. This ever-popular proof-only Morgan sold for $102,000.
The next Signature auction of US coins will open for bidding soon at [coins.HA.com](

[]A World of Money: The Extremely Rare 2nd Variety "Reversed Legends" Pattern Kwangtung 50 Cents
[Kwangtung. Kuang-hsü silver Pattern 3 Mace and 6 Candareens (50 Cents) ND (1889) MS63 NGC]( [Kwangtung. Kuang-hsü silver Pattern 3 Mace and 6 Candareens (50 Cents) ND (1889) MS63 NGC]( In 1889 a new mint was opened in Kwangtung. A series of 5 coins were struck: 3.65 Candareens (5 Cents), 7-3/10 Candareens (10 Cents), 1 Mace 4-3/5 Candareens (20 Cents), 3 Mace 6-1/2 Candareens (50 Cents), and 7 Mace 3 Candareens. These pieces were struck, and entered into circulation, to replace foreign silver coins. It was determined that these newly produced issues were heavier than the corresponding foreign silver coins, and this first Kwangtung issue was quickly removed from circulation and melted. Soon thereafter, a second series of Pattern coins was struck, of a slightly reduced weight, and this second series, struck in extremely small quantities, did not gain official approval from Peking. In the following year, the Kwangtung mint struck a re-designed third series of coins and this series was approved and adopted as the standard silver coins.
The 1889 second series is among the rarest and most coveted, of all Chinese Provincial coin issues. The example offered in our [December 6-7 Hong Kong World Coins auction]( is one of only two certified examples of the Second Series 3 Mace 6 Candareens (50 Cents). [This piece is the only example of the type that we have had the pleasure of offering at auction]( and is one of the truly classic Chinese numismatic rarities. It was missing from the Kann Collection, Bowker Collection, and the Irving Goodman Collection. This example is the plate coin from the Michael Chou book, "Top Chinese Coins-Silver Coins," where it is listed as being from the 1996 Singapore Auction, Lot 355.
Graded MS63 by NGC, this coin is sharply struck, with mottled blue and gray toning over lustrous, minimally marked surfaces.

Original Art for Critically Acclaimed Story Master Race Debuts at Heritage Auctions
[Master Race original comic art Bernie Krigstein]( The original art for the comic story that changed how comics told stories will make history on Thursday when [the original art for the complete 8-page story "Master Race"]( is offered at auction for the first time.
The 1955 EC Comic masterpiece, which writer and illustrator Neil Gaiman calls "one of the most important stories in the history of comics and the history of the art of comics," will be offered in its entirety in [Heritage Auctions' Nov. 15-17 Comics & Comic Art Auction]( in Dallas and on HA.com. The artwork for Master Race crosses the auction block the afternoon of Nov. 15.
EC Comics co-editor Bill Gaines and writer Al Feldstein developed the important Holocaust story, but critics point to Bernie Krigstein's storytelling artwork that perfected the piece and influenced the comic genre for more than 60 years.
"It's been called the most critically acclaimed comic story of all time," said Todd Hignite, Vice President at Heritage Auctions. "It's been the subject of numerous studies in books on the history of comics, as well as a hugely influential analysis by John Benson, David Kasakove and Art Spiegelman."
Frequently called the Citizen Kane of comic books, Master Race is a powerful look at the effects of Nazi concentration camp atrocities upon those who survived them, while retaining EC Comics' traditional "twisted" ending.
Krigstein's jaw-dropping formal invention of mirroring previous panels and layouts from one page to another became an iconic template for both mainstream and underground cartoonists for many decades to come. The format is said to have influenced Dave Gibbons' genre-shattering Watchmen in 1986 and many other illustrated contributions to American literature.
The story was the cover feature for Impact #1, one of EC's "New Direction" wave of books, released in 1955. So important is this story, that when Gaines sold much of EC's original artwork during the 1980s, it was the only artwork sold directly instead of at auction. An astute collector made Gaines "an offer he couldn't refuse" ... well over market-based value on what other EC art had been selling for at the time. The set is signed as "B. Krigstein" in the first panel.
"This is a true 'auction first' in comic history," Hignite said. "Krigstein's tour-de-force demonstrates everything he dreamed the comic language was and is capable of as an art form."
The [original art for the complete, 8-page story "Master Race,"]( illustrated by Krigstein for Impact #1 (EC, 1955), will be auctioned this Thursday afternoon, Nov. 15, in [Heritage Auctions' Nov. 15-17 Comics & Comic Art Auction]( in Dallas and on HA.com.
